Not to state the obvious but it is illegal and thats the reason the can states in BIG writing for off-road use only, and you can be defected.

Having said that, if you do it, light coats, build up the darkness slowly, and check you can see the brake lights at day, once you go to dark you are stuffed.

i have done this on my wifes ef wagon and it looks great. i did 3 coats on the tail lights and i gotta admit that it is too dark, i also did the side indicators with 1 coat and they look great and are still easily visible. just be very carefull as the tint is very very thin and runs very easily so i suggest to do 2 coats with the first being a tack coat and the second a light filler coat as to prevent runs. im sure that its not acctually legal to tint taillights but if you dont go too overboard and fit brighter globes you should have no problems with the law.

I did it to my XF almost a year ago. As far as im aware its legal as long as all the lights can be clearly seen. Mine are full on black and the lights are still pretty bright so im not to worried about them, being a p plater i always get pulled over for checks and not once has it been mentioned.(probly just jinxed myself lol)

Just do many light even coats ( allowing it to dry / tack ) until you get the shade you want

FORD EL, not sure where you are but it could be easier just to go to the police station and ask for a defect notice.

Too true.

I had full on black taillights for over a year without any trouble. I had even fitted brighter blinkers. A few months ago they warned me to take it off or I'll be defected next time they seen the car.
Aside from the law part, IMO in looks $h!t hot!!
Heres a pic of my car when it was done.

Man I miss that look!!!!

Dave (RapidXR8) has had it done professionally on his taillights ... had a tint mixed with clear and done by a spraypainter ... gloss finish ... looks great. Only lightly done though .. nothing over the top.

He posted a pic recent in the utes section:
