 : well iv never owned a turbo diesel before but took an 04 nissan navara str turbo diesel for a test drive today and when i took of the oil cap of while it was running it was choofin like a steam train, no actual steam just hot air (like really bad blo by in a worn petrol engine or a head gasket was blown) it has only done 70,000ks, and a mates navara similar ks does the same thing! wtf can anyone explain if this is normal with these engines or why it happens? cheers |

Dunno. Perhaps hot air from motor meets cold, moist air from outside. Result = steam?
70,000kms for a diesel means that it probably is only just run in. Shouldn't be having any troubles with it at such low kms unless it was neglected. If you get a chance, try driving one of the new common rail diesel engines. I know that driving the Pug puts a smile on my dial every time I put the foot down and the torque whisks us away.

yeh go the pugs! a new common rail would be nice but there just outa my price range for what i want,
its quite a large volume of air coming out the oil cap hole, but the fact iv seen two navaras do the same thing makes me think its normal for these engines, plus it has up to date log books. hope it is coz i wana buy this one. i just know that if my clevo did this id be up for $$$ |

Yeah it's normal for diesels, makes them look a bit like a steam engine.

Its just blow-by mate pretty much all Nissan 3.0L diesels do it. I did a short work experience stint with a diesel mob and asked the same question after seeing it and i was told you would not find one that didn't do it due to the way the engine is designed.

I don't think it is all blow by, some of it will be due to the back of the pistons pumping the air in the crankcase.

Sounds like she’s breathing heavy. I’ve never had anything to do with a diesel engine this small, however, the basics remain the same.
