Upgrading AUII factory stereo to double-din Alpine

Hi ...

Ok, I'm upgrading the factory stereo in my car and have managed to remove it, via the old 'coathanger trick' - I managed to squeeze my hand in behind it and jiggle it out, although it still took some time.

I want to replace it with a double-din Alpine unit (CDA-W560E), but am unsure as to how to mechanically install it; ie. there doesn't seem to be any adapters or mounting points inside the stereo cavity.

I've already come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to manufacture, somehow, a surround for the new unit, as there is a substantial gap around the entire edge (the stereo cavity is too large), but I need to mount the unit in there first.

Any ideas?

Did the new unit come with steel mounting adaptors with it?

I'd try and use them to at least get the unit in there, and then get a surround made up for the gap around it.

Any ideas?

I mounted an aftermarket unit recently.

Right angle drill for hole (be careful where) and screwdriver bit:-

and an aerpro double din surround (cut down) and aerpro pocket. Fills the hole nicely:-

The unit didn't come with any mounting brackets, just a small bag of different sized screws. I'm guessing I'm gonna have to make up my own brackets.

I'll have a look into the aerpro adapters.

This is turning into a lot more work than first thought

It should at least have a slide in cradle like the first pic (but twice as high for double DIN). If not, go back to the truck it fell off and ask them to make sure a cradle falls off next time.

Ill post some pics of how mine finished up, i made a surround for mine out of balsa wood and painted it black, when the unit is on it pops out and has multi angles, when its off it pops back in, pics arent the best

To mount mine i went to JB Hi-Fi install bay and got the double din tray as they dont come with them, the guy told me they dont fit what does he know. Idiot.

Believe me i didnt want to part with the factory unit, but taking it apart on a weekly basis to un-jam the cds got the better of me. But having a DVD is growing on me.

that was the one where black isnt available to australia wasnt it? thats what put me off buying some of those double dins, even the rep of Sony/JVC couldnt get me one

Yes this is the unit, although there was a guy at the time selling them on Ebay but i didnt trust his add or feedback, i thought the silver looks good as it adds some contrast but thats my opinion. My cousin has a all black dvd unit and the dash looks very plain with all black and no buttons.

One good thing about this unit is it allows you to put songs on a SD card, i have a 2gb card and have all songs on the card and can use folders like a normal MP3 cd but from a card, so you can have a DVD aswell as your song collection. Ill eventually get a Rear view camera and hook it up as it has the provisions.

I like the large screen but didn't want the double DIN.

I used a slide in cradle that came with the unit, worked well.

I just fitted a double din Pioneer dvd stacker to my LTD and had the same problem, in the end I made a frame to blend the unit into the dash and painted it to match the wood grain in the rest of the car, the frame is a very tight fit and nicely holds the whole thing in place very firmly... will try to take a pic tomorrow and post it in.
