Default 4SPD BTR's

Just wondering what cost effective mods you can do to these things? Im more concerned about durability and good shifts.

A better trans cooler perhaps? Any idea on what ones are good? Also any other tips with regards to maintenance would be great.

I dont think I require a rebuild or anything like that, just little things to help. It handled Heathcote alright, but did make some noises it usually doesn't.

Yep, a big cooler will work wonders ;)

Mech shift kit perhaps? Jury is out on the electronic shift kits.

A stall will probably work against the longevity of a BTR but it'll certainly wake the car up a little (with a shift kit)

Ive got an electronic shift kit and it works well really increases the shifts hard but i wouldnt use it all the time as it probably would **** it up after a while.

Decent sized high flowing transmission cooler.
AU S5 Solenoid, adjusted for slightly firmer shifts.

firm shifts are better less time spent on the clutch it improves gearbox life

Once I kill this T5 I've decided I'm going the BTR again with a hard a$$ shift kit, stally and a mass trans cooler. I've been in cars with the above and seen the wonders that they can do, and it would be easier to drive on the track.

5 speeds are only good for dosing.

So does anyone have any links for good coolers? Or brand names? Are they like intercoolers, ie - ebay special do the job fine?

And anyone know the RRP on an AU S5 Solenoid?

I think thats as far as I will go. Id love to put in a Hi-Stall and shift kit, but I dont intend to race it much more so I was just after something to help it in its old age..LOL

Alan
Go to DTM auto transmission in fynes st
they have done Mr-4.0 s and my gearbox with a st2 shift kit.. very snappy and watch out for wheel spin in 2nd gear when booting it.
Trans cooler is a must.. that XR6 one of mine is crap you need to get a way bigger one .. maybe worth about 200 for a good one . Shift kit with auto service 450.
I picked up my 660 foot times by .9 just with the kit. (My auto was shagged)

So whats it like trotting around town? Having something that is good on the track is one thing, but 99% of the time I am part throttle and cruising.

Ok, maybe 80% of the time..LOL

I would ask john if you could meet up and go for a drive in his car.. it think its ok but then I dont realy drive my car sedately .. it flog it to work and back every day ... in the wet and going around corners and changing gears .. you have to watch out or you will come unstuck at spin/crash

Well hopefully once the Geelong meet is sorted out for June he might come to that.

With the coolers, is something like this ok?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/automatic-tra...QQcmdZViewItem

Or would you want a big mofo like this?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/automatic-tra...QQcmdZViewItem

I would have thought that the AU/BA one would fit an EL Auto aswell.

all I know is it cost me 450 and they put in a st2 kit with drilled out plates for 3 and 4 gears. new oil and flush.

The auto I have had a lot of problems with and after the kit went in it stopped the slipping in all gears.
I just had to put the right speedo cog in it to get it to shift right when it was done.

That's where it's confusing. On one hand it just needs to be helped out in it's old age, but then the other hand all go n bling.

Thats like putting an timer skirt on an old lady so she is dignified and cruises nicley to the end, then saying but every now and then i need you to drag out the mini skirt and look hot.

Just feed it some viagra and go tuff street.

if it is called "VPS SOLENOID NUMBER 5" then a dealer will charge between $170-$240 depending on how much profit they want to make. retail is $236

just remember that you need a HI-Flow trans cooler

It has to flow a min of 1 ltr in 15 sec .. if it does not they you will build up line pressure and stuff your auto.

repco and bursons have hi-flow coolers .. tell them to make sure before you buy it

I got my trans built by DTM in geelong too ... cost 2500 or so for the gearbox and it dont slip at all compared to every other trans its had in it... chirps sometimes.. usually a massive launch forward on gearchange .... only thing I have agaist it is that it near throws u through the windscreen if its changing into second in low revs... such as heavy traffic or something... but when u ask for a trans built to race and last u gotta expect something out of the ordinary in normal driving.... think I might have to check the flow rate in mine actually after reading this.... think its got an old xd cooler plus the standard radiator one so flow rate might be little slow...

Mine was fine. I ran two external coolers and the electronic shift kit,

It lasted up until I had 250rwkw then went bang.
