Default what should i pay and have done???

Hi all,

I have a 97 el xr6, ive purchased a jmm dev 5 cam with springs to suit and was tossing up how to get them installed eg using a compressor or remove the head to get the springs in and obviously while the head is off get it reco'd. Now before i go to the mechanic id like to hear what i should pay for this (head reco'd(gaskets changed, valves done etc) , cam installed, vernier gear changed and springs changed), my cars done 158000 and is well serviced, should i do anything else while the heads off and can anyone recommend a good not overly expensive place in Sydney that i can talk to as well cheers.

Do they even make stroker kits for the I6....Pretty sure that they dont. If your taking the head off it may be also worth buy an AU copper head gasket instead of the E series one so you wont have troubles later on. If funds permit maybe get the head ported and polished to.

well considering he mentioned he does not have a very big budget that would not be the wisest move! twin turbo would not achieve much more than a single turbo anyway..

(I need to do my gasket at some time) I got a quote of around $500 to reco the head, an AU gasket is around the $90.00 mark (shop around for the best price) and I guess the rest could be fitted when you reinstall the head.

Don't forget - New Head Bolts when you re-Install.

i would be taking the head off porting the head and polshing it if funds permit, best thing to do is ring around! dev 5 cam will benifit most from the head porting, it is like breathing through a straw the cam is big enough to suck more air in..

head port polish, Au head gasket, cam gear springs, and Dev 5 cam. should run great then! i hope you have extractors an exhaust on allready! as it will benfit most from that too.

stroke is already long enough.. actually get a bit of power de-creasing the stroke, enables higher revs.

and ring a few places and ask them exactly what you have just asked us. why are people that lazy they need internet to do everything. get a few written quotes and then come back and post them up so you can compare the prices and services they offer..

I would expect the 1200 to 1400 hundred to be the top price you would pay although don't go the opposite way and try to save some dollars and get a crap job. At $1200 I would expect it to include a radiator clean & new coolant. (and don't forget the hoses while everything is off - you might as well do it properly) Once it's done get in the routine of changing your coolant every 12-18 months - it will help to prolong the life of your new gasket.

Now all you've got to do is find a good mechanic
