I was being an idiot an doing around 60 in a 50 zone (only for a very short time though) and I passed one of those hand held radar guns.
With hand held radar guns, if you are speeding, how will the police get your details? Will they motion for you to pull over or will they just write down your number plate as you pass? |

Most police use discretion when pulling people over with hand held devices... Camera's dont have that built in... Most of the time hand held police wont pull you over until you hit the 2nd fine bracket, which in Qld is 12-20kph over the limit, dont use that as gospel, as i do know some people who have been booked in the first fine bracket, but its rare... Guess they are waiting for the menace's doing 13kph over the limit...

sometimes the police have the gun attached to a camera, ala multinova.
but if you didn't see the flash, no ticket.

Phew, same thing happened to me about a week or so ago. Someone was doing about 10km/hr under the limit on a one lane road with unbroken line. When the road turned into two lanes I overtook and may have done about 7-10 km/hr over :togo: Saw the copper with the gun pointed right at me and thought I was done for sure. But no flash (it was dim so they would definatly have needed it). Lucky, hey?

In NSW it depends on which branch is doing the radar. If it's General Duties, then they usually don't come after you, as they will only have the one car working that spot. But you will (almost always) get the fine in the mail.
If it's Highway Patrol, you're screwed. They have cars hidden further up the road and they will come after you. They also like giving out defect notices more than the GD's. (Too much paperwork)
