Default Minispool In XR8

i have a minispool at home that fits my au xr8 diff. I was gonna get my 4.11 diff gears fitted and the lsd shimmed next week, but after talking to a mechanic from ford, i have contemplated fitting the spool for better take off and corner grip. I wanted my car to be able to handle good and be used for mostly circuit racing and drags. has anyone put a minispool in or does anyone know if it handles better or worse with it in.

To dangerous and not good for the driveline, i would've thought it would make it understeer to.

thats what i originally thought but when i talked to the ford mechanic he said it will handle good and you wont keep on having to rebuild the lsd. would shimming the lsd be the right option and how long would it last. i don't do too many burnouts just looking to get more grip and get the diff done as it is single spinning.

No idea about shimming but also you could snap axles to you'd think and excessive tyre wear and itll shake the c@#p outta ya car also.

it can't be too bad for handling... V8 supercars use full spools in their diffs...

i would suggest looking into a lokka as well... for track work tho.. the spool could be an option... but it does tend to wear out other parts a bit quicker...

Most people who crictise spools have never owned one, I had on in my XD ute and it was awesome, if your going to do it get decent axels. The only real down side is the noise when going around roundabouts.

Spools tend to be a little harsher on the street than LSD . but if you can live with the added wear then yes they do perform batter on the acceleration but corners get rough .

" whats he specialise in tractors because he obviously knows nothing about cars. a mini spool is illegal on the road and not just because they want to spoil your fun. they are dangerous when cornering especially at speed, the car will skip around corners and in general be a real pig to steer. they will stress your cars structure and things will start to break off nothing major just things like diff mounts oh and dint forget the cracks that will start to appear in your body but at least you won't need to rebuild your LSD. they also wreck the roads with the skipping on corners. if you are looking at a dedicated drag car thet will only be driven in straight lines go for it this means towing it on a trailer. if you want to corner forget it and if you want to drive it on the road don't even think about it

Spools for drag racing only, not practical on the road.

okay thanks. im gonna fit the diff gears and get my lsd shimmed so that it becomes a stronger lsd. i would rather spend money on rebuilding the lsd rather then getting new axles.

You don't want to Shim the LSD, You want to have it repacked with new Friction and steel disks using extra friction disk's with the alternating method to give a higher Toque holding ability before it allows Slip.

You want it packed on both sides as follows.

Shim, Friction, Steel, Friction, Steel, Friction, Steel, Friction, Side gear.

This is opposite to how it is done at Factory, as the double up on the Steel disks at factory giving the LSD less toque holding capability allowing slip to occur sooner.

Cheers.
