Pretty much all WQ Fiesta's share the same rust issue as in the pic (including XR4's), I dont know if you have a WQ Fiesta, but if so perhaps you should have a look under yours sometime, or just take a visit to your nearest Ford dealer and check it out.

some metals are actually designed to have surface rust form on them, it strengthens the metal.

Oh noes... surface rust! Get a piece of the crappiest grade sand paper you can get... or even your fingernail... and you can scrape that off and see your shiney metal again. That has absolutley zero effect on anything at all.

There's some other stuff I really want to say, in reply to some of your comments earlier (in this thread I believe)... but I think it would be considered offensive or something like that, so I won't.

Whether it be "surface rust" or something that could have the potential over time to turn into deep corrosive rust after being exposed to the elements and the rigures of time, the fact is........"it shouldn't be there!!"

I have never seen it on any other car I have ever owned, and indeed have taken the interest to check many other cars of various makes and models to see if they too are "inflicted" with the same amount of obvious ineptitude and oversight as the manufacturing team at Ford.......and they're not.

Everyone I have shown the photos to or indeed the car itself during the time I owned it were completely horrified with what they saw and pretty much said that they too would simply "not accept a car in that state either."
"Are you sure it's safe to drive" was a common statement made.....among others.

Ford have obviously taken some completely illogical cost cutting shortcut and not coated the parts for some ungodly known reason that defies all logic, bear in mind that the rear brake/suspension components on the very same car do get coated but not the front parts?........it defies all possible reasoning.

As for "sanding" the rust off, this would simply be impossible as the rust is absolutely everywhere and occupies pretty much every "nook and cranny" in the steering/suspension and brake componentry........not to mention of course it would be a rather pointless exercise as the components if not treated and coated correctly would of course be rusty again in no time at all.

All this of course is "water under the bridge" to me as I do not own the car any more, I was simply answering an earlier post by "jeremyweb" who was obviously unaware of the rust issue in WQ Fiesta's, now he knows.

If you or anyone else for that matter believes it is not a problem and are comfortable with your Fiesta even after being advised that this issue exists..........then good luck to you, for me though it simply was not good enough, if other manufacturers can take the time and effort, why can't Ford?

The Fiesta has been driven around europe since 2002 and during winter the roads are salted. Typically cars rust much sooner in those conditions and they have no problems with steering compenents rusting away.

I dont see it being a problem either. My 2004 Zetec has done over 100,000k's mostly geting to and from work its a country road with lots of trucks etc. It has to be the most bumpy and pot holed road in Aus. Nothing as ever broken or fallen off. It still handles just as good as it did the day I picked it up from the dealer.

I lived in the UK for many years and understand the conditions, if it's good enough for the UK then one would have to conclude it is undoubtably good enough for the conditions here.

My beef, if you can call it that.....is that it should "not in my opinion", and the opinion of many others I have spoken to "be there in the first place", nothing more than that.

I think it was shortsighted and miserable of the bean counters at Ford to allow what is certainly a wonderful car to be somewhat blemished by something such as this, simply in order to save a few miserable digits off the "bottom line".........case closed.

The funny thing about the rust thing is... when I had my Fiesta, back around January this year... I had a small accident type thing with it that resulted in a bent tie rod. It was a 06/2005 WP Zetec (complied 08/2005) that I'd own since virtually brand new (was a demo). The mechanic who did the work was a friend of course and I was with him the whole time, and walked around looking at the whole underside of the car whilst it was on the hoist and there was not a hint of rust anywhere at all. Not on my old bent tie-rod and definitley not on the brand new out of the box one they put on it.

From what I've heard from the few people I've heard about with this problem - from this site only - its all been WQ's. So what, did WQ suddenly turn bad or something?

Mine has the rust too, and I totally agree with you.

No, it's not gonna crumble or fall off, but considering everything else that they did right with this car, it's really not good enough.
