Jags around that era were not known for their reliability.
Nice vehicles ... but parts and repairs were not cheap ... only a handful of people i know own Jags .... and only one of them has had a dream run with theirs.

There are a few getting round for sale with 350 chev conversions.

Mechanically they are like alot of british cars...

But they are classy and different nevertheless.

F6 Engine, 6 speed auto and loom to suit would make it a damn nice car :->

Hey Schnoods, Prob saw mine around a couple years ago. 78 xj6 LWB .I fitted a 302w and c4 and dropped it to the bump stops. Handled like a dream and sounded great, better than a Chev conv. I had a workshop manual so nothing was too hard . Im sorry i sold it.

Beautiful touring cars, just eat the miles up and so comfortable. Electrics weren't great. Get a well maintained one though and should be pretty good. Expensive to service and maintain.

About as reliable as a politicians word before an election.
Anyone who owned one or a Jag of that era always had 2 cars, the second one was because the Daimler/Jag was always in the work shop. Thats why they all have low kays.
If you can get it cheap enough and do an engine conversion as suggested then it might be worthwhile.

God help you and your bank account when it breaks; and it will often. A car for the heart not the brain. Great drive when they are working but that's generally not often.

If you're going to get one, Aim for a MK10 twin tank V8, all woodgrain and leather interior and with the manual, not that difficult to work on, IF (BIG IF) you can source the parts

Fairly cheap to buy considering they are such nice cars to drive ...... as long as you can hand the keys back to the owner when you are finished!

Just have a healthy bank balance, budget for repairs monthly and have a good oil drip tray if you have a nice driveway. Apart from that.... I love Jags!

When I owned my Triumph, don't ask, a guy in the club commented that AA and RAC both owned shares in Lucal and British Leyland. Funny thing is, the only electrical drama I had was the side repeater glowing for no reason. However, we did have an annual award for the most electrical dramas, prize was a burnt out Lucas alternator.

Recently sold 87 XJ40 sovereign, loved it to bits even though it was a pile o ****. big problems for jags between 82 and 86, have been told to never buy one between those years. Some pretty horrific servicing costs at a dealer- about $140/hour in labour.

Reliability- throw a dice. If you're lucky enough to land on 7, you might get one without any issues.... in other words- there's always something that needs doing, even if it is really minor. If you don''t fix up minor problems, they add up, making the car look like an unloved POS...like mine ended up looking.

Make sure air con is always cold- it also cools fuel to prevent vapor lock.
Head studs run through cooling jackets in block- may be rusted in place.
Valve buckets can work loose and destroy engine. many hold down kits for this. absolutely crucial that it is fitted.
Overheating = engine dead. Never above 88 celcius or new head required.
Valve seats/heads tend to burn out more often that you'd expect/want.
Fuel injector hoses may perish, split, leak...= fire.
Electrics = nightmare unless they've been maintained in PERFECT condition and may still give trouble.
Gearbox- GM unit. Should be good. Look for usual auto failure signs.
Multitude of suspension bushes are expensive to replace (due to labour, not parts) and must be in good condition for the suspension to do its job (and to pass rego, as I found out the hard way)
Brakes are very strong. read inboard discs are a pain to change. not sure about fronts.
RUST is a major problem. check EVERYWHERE thoroughly. I mean EVERYWHERE- under rubber...under carpet...under wood.
check to see that it doesn't use metric wheels/tyres. only tyres you can get for them are $530 EACH. Found that out the hard way too.
Oil leak are common and virtually impossible to eliminate.

Plenty more if you want to know about it but you'll have to ask specific questions.

And to think I had a warped idea to buy one and drop a Toyota 2JZ-GTE in.
Seriously, a BMW 7 series is a better idea, as far as reliability is concerned anyway. Just rememeber, the cheaper a car in this class is, the more expensive it will be.

If I had the money to buy and up keep a Jag it would be a series 1 E Type love them. But the only XJ6 Jags that are reliable are when Ford took over operations. The 94-97 models with the 3.6 and 4 litre are about the pick out of them. Joe Cartwrights write up on the later XJ6's but two many problems with the earlier ones.
