Default McLaren to build F1 successor

Quote:
McLaren has decided to create a successor to its F1 supercar, a new report finds. The original F1 — designed by Formula One designer Gordon Murray — had three seats and was capable or hitting 241 mph, thanks to its BMW-sourced V12 engine. Fewer than 100 were ever built. Originally reported on back in July, the new McLaren is said to be a lightweight two-seater with V8 power being created under the name P11.

According to British magazine CAR, the P11 promises to be even faster than the F1 and is expected to bow in the fall of 2010.

McLaren recently broke ties with Mercedes after co-creating the SLR supercar. Mercedes has since decide to create the successor to the SLR — the SLC – with a partnership between Mercedes/AMG and H.W.A..
Apparently the decision to build the successor came after receiving a large document from an anonymous party although they deny it.
Here a pic of it doing some early testing.

Gordon Murray was once asked whether he saw the McLaren F1 as a competitor for the Ferrari F40.

He said, "I don't think we have anyone who can weld that badly."

It is. I just saw the air freight copy of England’s Car magazine.

They were talking Aluminium construction with carbon fibre panels (not a CF monocoque) and a Mercedes V8. Gordon Murray isn’t with McLaren anymore so it’ll be interesting how it turns out. The prototype is meant to look smaller than an Audi R8 and in the Car photos is looked like the clean uncluttered design that you’d expect from McLaren. The’ve been rumoured to have a planned “little Mac” Ferrari 360-430 competitor in the planning stage for ages.

Don’t know how this squares with reports of AMG coming out with an R8 competitor as well.

As well as the new McLaren mid-engined (super?) car Gordon Murray has had a hand in the Caparo T1 and is planning something of his own around 2010.

quote:
hen, Murray has tantalisingly hinted, GMD will look at designing a supercar, possibly for a 2010 release, plus a race programme. With fourteen employees, many of them ex-McLaren, the new company has the expertise and the capacity for both.

‘Some four years of work have already gone into a new breed of supercar,’ reads the firm’s introductory statement, ‘a car that absolutely reverses the trend towards larger, heavier and more powerful supercars. This car will give the driver all the driving feedback and pleasure that a good power-to-weight ratio and vehicle dynamics can deliver, but from light weight and modest power. The result will be a more affordable and more environmentally friendly supercar. The company is also gearing up during the next twelve months to undertake a race programme.’
Of course, Murray’s sports and race car credentials are exemplary. His Brabham and McLaren F1 cars won five drivers’ world championships between them, while the legacy of his 1994 McLaren F1 still looms over the supercar landscape like a colossus. Its race derivitive, the F1 GTR, finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th in its first Le Mans in 1995. If all goes according to plan, Gordon Murray should be back at Le Mans within the next few years with a new race car, this time bearing his own name. It will have a lot to live up to…
