Default Dragging newbie. How do ya drag?

I'm gonna race a mates VL at one of those 1/4 mile tracks.

I'm after tips basically on how to win.

How do I get the best launch?

I got a 4 speed auto so do I just flaw it in power or manually shift it?

Any help is appreciated.

Best Idea is probably the way i learnt .. Easy as ..

Stall it up to about 1500rpm , on the Last Yellow Xmas Tree light , Launch in 2cnd, then hit 3rd and finsih the run ..

Should be Good

Does stall it up mean get it to 1500rpm without moving? (so left foot on brake)

I was told to hold it into first as long as possible and around 80k's flick to second and I shouldn't need 3rd?

Would I get a slow start beginning in 2nd?

For a start: How good is your mates VL?

(I mean this in the nicest possible way - so you've never been down the 1/4 mile b4, and you think you can win. all props to you )

Mate.
Just leave it in drive with power on. Stall it up a bit at the line, left foot on brake, right foot on the throtle. Dont give it too much when stalling it up, just enought to load up the converter. On the last amber snap the throtle open and get off the brake at the same time. Then just hold on and watch the crapy VL disapear behind you!
I had an EB, this was the fastest way for me. Funily enough a mate had a 5 speed vl, we raced and I kicked his ***! If its a turbo your in the s*#t.
Good luck!

why would you want to start in 2nd? the faster the 60 foot time the better your time in the end will be

stock car i would be changing around 5000rpm max if it was me

The quickest way to get down the track in the VL is to leave it on the line and run down.

A few posts further up somebody told me to launch in second.

There's a lot of different techniques.

What one would be best.

My only mod is a 2.5 inch catback exhaust and I don't have a transmission cooler.

Should I launch first and then at 5000rpm hit second then another 5000rpm and into 3rd?

His VL is a manual.

I want there to be no possible way for him to win.

N-bombs are the, well, bomb. Keep it in Neutral, rev to 5000rpm, "dump" into D. Off you go!

Anyway, 1st in a BTR *is* like 2nd in a T5. Either manually shift (try between 4500-5000rpm) or use the power button and leave in D. The power button doesn't offer any more "power" so to speak, but it holds onto gears for a couple of hundred RPM more.

I agree. Start with the power button on and get a baseline time. The try shifting manually as you get more confident.

lol seriously though.

There's a lot of different methods mentioned here and I don't know what one to use/practise?

What's the best method to beat a VL standard manual?

And dont forget the lights....we've all seen a slower car beat a faster car by virtue of a better light.....dont forget to leave on the LAST amber..not the green...go out and watch how the quick guys run before you go to the line. :

PS; Both you and your friend should be commended for taking this to the dragstrip rather than settling it on the streets..... :
