I've done jury duty before and it's absolute crap. what happens is the jury is breifed about the case then you are issued with a number at the roll call, jury is generaly selected from a list of 60 people. All the numbers are put into a hat then 12 numbers are drawn out one at a time, this is when the solicitors for both sides decide wether they like you or not and if they dont then you will be sent home. If you have to sit on the jury you hear both sides of the case (only what the respective sides want you to hear) and then sent out to another room where 12 people who dont know anything about law are supposed to make a desision of guilty or not guilty. Sounds simple hey, it's not because 12 people all hear something different or some one has a long lost cousine who's friends friend had a similar situation and therefoe has a different veiw of things. If you do sit on the jury you'll get an insite to the legal system you'll never forget. Your token payments are about $80 per day then a travel allowence depending distance and the availability of public transport. The only bennefit is that once you have sat on a jury you cant be called again for three years. I spent 4 days of confusion with jury duty it sucks.

Homer: "So, what were we talking about boy"
Bart: "Uhh, you were telling me about the time you beat jury duty." Homer: "Ohh yeah....the key is to tell them that you're prejudiced against all races."

I just got a letter yesterday to do jury duty.
Not happy about it so i'll be doing my best to get out of it. A guy at work had to do it 6 months ago for an axe murder (son killed father). Apparently the acused only lived one suburb down from him, he himself when he found out. He said at one point he fell asleep and the desk top he had pulled out and was leaning on slamed back down and made a huge bang. With this the whole court room had turned and starred at him. It's not a position you want to be in!

I didn't mind doing jury duty as it did give me an extra insight into how people think and hear different things.
Considering I am studying criminology, criminal justice and a bit of law it made it far more interesting, but I guess if you really take the view you don't care less then it would be pretty ordinary. Think of it as your chance to help our society in becoming a better place. You know, all those times you all curse the 'justice system' but then don't want to give up your precious time to do your duty is a good reason to stop your complaining about our system or rethink and do what is right. Oh and if you think you can't be called for three years that isn't actually correct either. I have been called twice (only managed to get there once due to being in hospital the second time) but it was within two years of each other.

I'd do it if called up. I look at it this way, if I am ever taken to court I'd like to think that there are some people out there who a) give a damn and b) have a clue are willing to sit on the jury!

I got called up for a re-trial last year.
Evidence had been entered and jury was told it could only happen "this way". (bloody finger print on a picture) Seems the defence found a guy in the USofA that proved it could happen "other ways". Hence the re-trial. Got found guilty again the second time around.

Well, I went and did my jury duty today. Left home to travel 100km to the courthouse. Got there at 9.00am. Judge came in at 10.00am. Back in the car and on my way home at 10.15am. What a waste of time!

i got called up this year, got "challenged" for a two case, and for the third one the judge came to a ruling that no jury was allowed to because of the high media coverage, and on the forth day I wasn't picked, so 4 days of wasting my time watching some crap morning show
