Default Eleanor specs?

OK, me and a mate at work have a disagreement over the original motor spec of the 67? Shelby Mustang GT500 (see gone in 60). He says the 500 means 500ci, i say it means nothing, and it was a 428ci i am pretty sure (have been wrong before). Can someone please let me know what it would have been?

For starters "Eleanor" is a fictitious movie car..

But.. the GT500 was a 428, yes, the GT350 was a 289!

Just took a glance at Carroll Shelby's book, you'll love this:
They got the "350" name by measuring the distance from the conference room to the shops across the street..

"Shelby, anxious to get the matter settled asked remington to estimate the distance frm their conference room to the shops across the street, everyone made their guesses, when he came back he said 350ft, so Shelby said lets call the little car the GT350"...

The "500" was chossen because it was a bigger number for a "bigger engine"..

The 428 Cobra jet was rated at 335HP..

You could also option a dual 4 barrel induction setup on the 428 that gave a claimed 355 HP... The rumors of the time thought it was closer to 400 though!

About 50 were made with the 427 medium riser, and GT500 SuperSnake was a one off special build with a 427 High Riser, and could apparently top 170MPH

For the record, The 350 in GT350 came from one of the weirdest ways.

The 350 name didn't have exotic or technical origins. It was arrived at when Shelby got exasperated by a tedious Ford name-the-car meeting. While staring through the window, he asked how far away the building was across the street. When it measured 350 feet, Shelby arbitrarily suggested the car be called the GT-350 -- so it was.

I dont know about that, I read somewhere that 350 was the length of Carroll Shelby's first production line in ft.
But isn't there a company called Unique Performance that was building a limited run of GT500 E (Eleanor) replicas but with Shelby build plates on them?
So yeah I guess it depends on which car you mean, The original gone in 60 seconds car was a 1970 Boss mustang or something like that, and if its a replica built by Unique Performance it depends on how deep your pockets are, the higher specced Eleanor has something in the region of 6-700 hp at the flywheel
But who cares really... they are all excellent cars and id love to have any of them parked in my shed.

The original Elanor was a 1971 Mach1 Mustang.

I thought the Shelby GT500 had a 427ci FE family Ford Racing engine.

I'm pretty sure the 428ci didn't come out until the late 60's when Ford needed a cheaper engine than the tolerance tight 427ci.

Don't know what the big deal about the Shelby was anyway I'd much rather take a BOSS 351 if I wanted a truly fast Mustang.

The biggest question is how they managed to fit the big block FE in the engine bay when I thought they had to make the Mustang bigger to accomadate the FE.

I think a Plymouth 'Hemi' Cuda is faster than the Elanor

1966 Was the year the 428 was introduced in the Thunderbird and Galaxies.

The 1967 Mustang was the first with the larger engine bay, to accomodate the GT390 engine, which is physically the same size as the 428 and 427.

No, the REMAKE movie was based on the 67 fastback.

Yes I Should clarrify that, the remake movie "Eleanor" (which is what were talking about) was based on the 67 fastback, yes in the original 1974 movie it was a mach 1..

Very different looking cars that's for sure!
I can't say i can appreciate the look of the Fastbacks after the 1970 model.

LOL yeah, and that stunt on the freeway where he clips the other car and smacks into the pole was actually a real crash too.

I have both that film and the "sequel" called Junkman on DVD, those films rock!

I think in the end credits of the DVD, Denise Halicki (HB Halicki's widow) is in the passenger seat of Eleanor as she's doing donuts, I think that mustang pictured must get around a bit for promo stuff still.

I think later GT-350s were 302 and 351 Windsor powered. Basically the 351 refered to the Small Block and 500 to the Big Block.

Hahaha, I knew it existed because of the trailer on the original Gone In 60 Seconds DVD...however didn't think much of it and didn't go out of my way to look for it.

Then one day I'm looking through those cheap "bins" at EzyDVD seeing if there was anything worthwhile, and there was Junkman just sitting there, waiting, no, begging, to be purchased for $9.95

Nah I don't mind the movies, they're not the most awesome ever made, but good for a watch every now & then. In fact, I just cranked out the original Gone In 60 Seconds DVD and put it in my computer, its just starting on my second monitor as I type this
