Default 71 capri build up.. need some info

hey guys, have just joined the site! i have a 1 owner 71 capri i am building up, my grandfather bought it new and has been passed onto me.

im holden through and through have a 355 clubby on nos, etc but have always wanted to do the capri up.. now its my chance!!


i have a wrecked eb xr8 sprint, motor auto trans and diff are ok, i was thinking of putting them in place, where would i find a sump etc to suit? does anyone make kits to put the efi 302 into capris?

also what is the best brake option.. even if i dont put the 302 into the capri, the brakes are terrible.. is there a way to put falcon brakes on them?



any help would be great,

im not the right guy to answer ur questions but most likely the falcon parts (brakes etc) wont fit on the capri, its a much smaller car.. then again nissan pulsar brakes fit a datsun 1200

Hoppers Stoppers here in Melbourne do a 5 stud Falcon conversion which is apparently good value for money. Castlemaine rod shop do a similar conversion.
Just out of interest, is the Capri a genuine V6 GT? If so, you might be better off leaving it well alone and source a 4cyl to do your V8 Conversion.

EB XR8 Sprints don't exist. It's either an EB XR8 or an ED XR8 or an ED XR8 Sprint. If it's an ED XR8 Sprint then I hope it is very very crunched as otherwise you will be cutting up a rare and soon to be valuable car as they made less than 500 of them IIRC.

This would be akin to cutting up a VL Walky to use the injected 5 litre in a Torana.

sorry guys its actually a eb xr8 with sprint decals! but has the quad headlight front on it , which i have sold

the capri is a 4 cyl 1600.

interesting about the brakes .. hmm got me thinking now i might find out about fitting the eb brakes onto the capri from the hopper stopper guys

does anyone know if i have to cut the firewall to fit the 302? as i looked at all the capris at summernats and they all had it cut back a bit ?

i can get it engineered in sa with the std 302 efi if i fit the falcon brakes and emmisions gear too!

unless u do some serious research i would just recomend taking out your engine and simply taking some measurements from ALL angles and points.

is this car road going or a garage project?

No cutting of the firewall is required for the 302 (and none required to slip a Clevo in there either ). You will however have to cut the original radiator panel out as it intrudes too far into the engione bay, fouling the engine.

I would recommend talking to the guys at Castlemaine rod shop and getting their Capri V8 conversion kits. This includes chassis rails, engine mounts, and crossmembers, when I did mine it all fitted well and provided a good strengthening basis for the V8. CRS also can supply extractors for the 302.

As for brakes, talk to Hoppers stoppers or CRS for upgrading, hoppers are good. I used a Datsun 120Y booster with an XD Booster for clearance, worked well. theres other options, so talk to whoever you get the brake kit from.

The swap is dead easy, so don't be afraid of it. Any more questions, feel free to PM me since I've been there and done that.

sterling its a garage project hasnt been regoed for 6 years it will get the new driveline, interior paint and wheels etc before it comes back on the road!!

capri351 , thanks heaps for the info , i talked to crs at the summernats and they didnt seem too interested in expaining what i needed and the costs, the guy told me id need 2600 at least for the kit.. is this true? that was for the chassis kit, mounts etc,

yeah ill go thru hoppers stoppers as i did when i got my torana upgrade kit!!

The last time I looked at their site the chassis kit was around $1000 (only late last year). I've got one you can have for $500, never been fitted, still has all the bolts and mounts etc. Freight would be an issue with these though, although I suppose they must ship them from Castlemaine to various places around Aus.


Maybe they were talking about everything you'd need (chassis kit, brake kit......), but $2600 for the chassis kit alone doesn't sound right.

hey jamie, nah was 2600 for chassis kit,engine mount kit, crossmember kit, and somthing else.. didnt quite listen as the guy seemed quite rude.. maybe thought i was wasting his time? as im young(ish) almost 21.. who knows

No problem mate.

Seems CRS has the same attitude even after a management change. I got the same attitude when trying to get some info about the brake conversion. Worked it out myself in the end.

I paid about $2000 from memory and that was for everything including Bronco sump and brake kit. But that was some time ago, so I would expect a few more dollars nowadays. they probably pulled a number out of their for you, thats always a problem for a 21 yr old, been there had that.
