Been in Singapore for a few days now and am still getting used to the daily monsoonal rains and the stifling heat and humidity... As usual im cheaking out all the cars... pick up the local car section and see what costs how much....
All i can say is thank God i dont live in Singapore. The government seems to tax car imports around 200% or more to keep people from buying cars.... 1.6 Kia Cerato, Au$32,500 1.0 Chevy Matiz, Au$30,200 Mazda 2 SP, Au$40,500 Ford Mondeo, Au$56,000 Mazda 6 SP, Au$59,500 These prices are "From" as well lol! |

One thing I notice when I was in Singapore is that all the cars over there have puny engines compared their Aust versions. i.e the corolla is a 1.6 compared with 1.8, Mazda 3 is also 1.6L (i think) comapred with 2.0L over here.

Yeah thats the same with most of Asia and Europe. What ever engine we have for our cars there is always 1 or 2 engines available to other countries that are smaller.
Eg the Impreza here has a 1.6, the Yaris goes all the way down to a 1.0 and the corola has a 1.4 as well as a 1.6........ |

I think the engines are smaller there cause they dont do any towing and they dont have to contend with any hills like we do here in Australia. My cousin who lives in Malaysia has a 1.5L thats alittle bigger than a Focus. And it goes pretty good. Its all flat over there.

I've read that you also have to bid for some sort of certificate to allow you to buy your car. That cert costs tens of thousands of dollars !

I also heard that you have to pay more tax if you want a larger engined car - thats why all the cars over there have smaller engines.

There is no point in having powerfull cars over there. Firstly it makes Canberra look big and secondly it is a VERY nasty place if you break the law, ANY law at all. e.g. you can go to jail for littering.

Lived in Singapore.you bid for a certificate to buy a car.then u purchase the car on top of that......when you replace your car as you cant have a car any older than 5 years old...........you get a huge % back on value of car and certificate.thats how roads etc are kept excellent and you dont see crap cars like here in oz.................

Thanx for that info funtime, was wondering how that works, as its been explained to me in bits and pieces.
I wouldnt know about average income, but its goes from VERY low (say $300 per month for live in nannies / maids to 150,000-170,000 a year for professionals. But that was only after a 10 second glance in the papers.... Its been raining all day and my "waterproof" shoes are soaked through,,,, :( |

In Singapore if you want to drive a 2.0 litre car, you need to buy the COE
(Certificate Of Entitlement) first before you can buy a car. It will cost you $40,000 for the COE for a 2.0 litre car plus whatever the cost for the new car. Less cc will cost less. A Swift might only cost $20,000 as it is 1.3 litre. |

When I was living in Singapore I gained the distinction of being one of the few people in the world to come close to being run over by a McLaren F1! A Harley will cost you about 120,000 on the road too.
