I've got to agree there... We have a Kelpie/blue cattle dog that we rescued from the RSPCA 2 years ago.

He responds to hand commands (sometimes grumpily), he's loyal as all hell, and the ball control he has is unbelievable! He can guide a football around the yard at full pelt, using his nose and front paws. He'll "throw" a tennis ball to me (to throw for him) by pouncing on it with his front paws... an eerily accurate aim!

The author used "understanding of new commands" and "obey first command" as his standards of intelligence. He surveyed dog trainers and compiled this list of dog intelligence. While this method of ordering dog intelligence is acceptable for training and working with dogs, it does not apply to the genetic intelligence which can be measured by ingenuity and understanding of common situations. Some dog breeds may be lower on the list due to their stubborn nature, but this nature does not make them unintelligent or impossible to train.

I think Staffies would rate highly on ingenuity, even if they are too stubborn to give you back a ball when you say drop. A game of Tug is much more fun than fetch! :

Smart dog??

Other than Odie, Staffy's are pretty smart but ours is proving just how spastic they can get in their old age. How do you Kelpie owner's keep up and keep the dog on track??

We have one Golden Retriever, Monty...He's smart...has figured out how to open sliding doors to get into the house if theres a storm and understands us when we ask him where any one of his toys are...he goes and fetches it
Cheeky little fellow too...I'll go to call him over, he'll look at me and consider for a couple of seconds before bolting off in the opposite direction...Not bad for a 10 Y.o hehe

Yes I couldn't find my Kelpie/Dingo on the list (all kelpies have dingo blood in them).

I dont know who does the intelligent test to see how these dogs rank from smart to dumb,but i have never seen an intelligent rottwieller.and i have a mate that has owned three.dopey as.

you seemed to have left out 1 list.The list of "best dog to own".

that would be NO.1 -english staffordshire.-best all round dog .

might be smart in the country but not so smart in the city.when i was in primary school my mates cattle dog could not keep still.he lived in a narrow street and cars would have to slow down to get through.every time a car went passed the dog would try and bite the tyres and sometimes got a grip and few head munches,still keeped coming back for more.It also attacked a kid after previously biting another kid and had to be put down.my mate was devastated.

on another note one day a dog jumped over the fence of my mates house and attacked his dog.his dog attacked and killed the other dog and the police show up and shoot mt mates dog dead because they said it seemed aggressive.it seemed to be friendly in all the years that he had owned it.he was not even there when the cops shot it in front of his mother.the dog was in its own home protecting its own house and this is the cops answer.lucky for them it was not my dog.

My old kelpie X had one floppy ear too, not a pure kelpie though
