Strange Unknown Road Laws

Came across this one.. I never knew about it.. LOL..

Under the Smoky Vehicle Program vehicles blowing smoke can be reported.

The Clean Air Act prohibits all vehicles blowing smoke for more than 10 seconds. If you see and vehicle exceed this 10 second smoke rule you can report them to the DEC's pollution line by phoning 131 555 or at www.environment.nsw.gov.au/esdsmoky/index.htm

The DEC can issue infringement and defect notices to owners of smoky vehicles.

Vehicles identified as being smoky are given 30 days by the DEC to have the vehicles repaired. If the vehicles are not repaired they are required to have an emission test at the RTA. If the vehicle fails this test it will be issued with an defect notice.

How is it a stupid law?

10 seconds of smoke is quite a lot, and be it tune related or a worn engine, why the hell should I, or anyone else have to breathe that crap in?

i did actually know that one. specially in NSW they now even have EPA cars drive around (ironic) with purple lights to pull u over (honestly who is going to pull over when purple lights are flashing you)

yeah their's a lot of P.O.S. with worn engine's getting around,
close all vent's when behind one.

Is this a federal or state law?

I believe that this one was made up specifically for deisel powered vehicles.
Anyone been stuck behind a Nissan Patrol spewing smoke and fumes all over you because there is a slight incline in the road and the motor is under a bit of load?

I know the one. My dad received a letter from the EPA about 7-8 years ago for that one. He had an old Ford D-series truck, that he used to use around the farm at Maffra. The only times it went on the road was when it went to Dad's other block of land and back. This other block of land was only about 5km away from the farm.

Anyway, the engine in the truck was stuffed. It'd hardly get over 60, and was blowing a hell of a lot of smoke. One day, dad received this letter saying it had been sighted at Glen Waverly with a smokey exhaust. What was weird was, sure it did have a very smokey exhaust, but it was nowhere near Glen Waverly! I doubt it would have made the distance there!

I know I have.

i`m pretty sure your right on that one ..........it used to be common on the older diesels to blow smoke under load for up to 10 seconds, after 10 seconds they were fair game for law enforcers.

I'll add another strange law. This is in Queensland. Up until 5 or so years ago, horses had the right of way on public roads, even if they had no rider! A friend of my mum's hit a horse that had escaped from it's paddock and the lady was killed. No charges were pressed against the owner of the horse as it had right of way. How f***n crazy.

There's still a law in SA stating a driver can urinate on the inside front (LHF) wheel of their car. It dates back to the days of horse and carts, so the rider can keep hold of the horses.

there is still a lot of those types of laws that are still used today

geelong council are working through half of the crap by laws that are still on their current list

There was something i read ages ago about drink-driving, you could ride a goat drunk or something, can't remember exactly at 2:30am but it was along the lines of a misc animal that was a loophole in vic.
