Default Black tie?

OK, so what constitutes "Black tie".

It's a wedding. Does it mean a tux? Or will a black / charcoal suit suffice?

And does it have to be bow tie?

Black suit will suffice, but maybe you might want to get a new shirt and buy a Black Tie. It depends on how well you know the people and what there tastes are, if you are invited from the female side, ring her and ask, if not ring your mate and ask him....Usually it just means Dress to impress...I personally hate bow ties..

However in the true sense BLACK TIE means a TUX!!! Go rent one...

Black tie to me means Formal wear.

It could constitute a black tuxedo with bow tie. I reckon if its a black suit with white shirt and black tie, you could get away with that.

It needs to be formal wear though. Generally a wedding will consist of a suit & tie if your a guest. Being the groom its a different story obviously.

Looks like I'll be hiring a tux then. I have a few suits, which I wear for work, but they are charcoal or striped. And if I wear that t-shirt, I'll freeze my a55 off.... it's in the hunter valley in the first week of July !!
