Question Insurance hassles for modified cars

Hi

A few people have told me that some insurance companies screw their nose up when you notify them of any mods and then raise your insurance premium way beyond the value of the modification even if the mods are all bling and no zing? Anyone had this problem?

Just because we mod our cars doesn't mean we are irresponsible hoon drivers.........they are all driving commodes and Jap imports!

My insurer knows about all my mods and don't have a problem with them. I pay less than 1k a year too.

depends how old you are. and what area you live in(ie cabramatta - more likely to be stolen if its got bling bling etc)

70% of the time i dont undetstand why since usually aftermarket mods are cheaper then the genuine parts!

I think a lot of the insurers believe adding bling will increse the risk of your car being stolen and adding zing will increase the chance of an accident.

I'm sure they want to keep their jobs simple and would prefer not to bother sourcing or assessing damage on unique parts i.e. custom 22" billet wheels imported from the US.

I'm with Shannons, and they couldn't care less what I do to the blue rocket, which doesn't affect my premium at all.

I had just turned 22 when I gave Shannons a call, they didn't even question me about my age.

Do you have to tell them about flash tuning? Or wouldnt they even bother checking in an event of a accident.??

Bling is just the reason I keep my car almost std looking from outside...
Oh it is std...
Btw you don't have to tell the full story .. You KNOW when you add these things its NOT increasing your cars value.. So cop it sweet or leave it alone!!
Example XR wheels are far more expensive than aftermarket bling wheels, so why pay the extra ?? If you want them ??. Pay!! Cope it sweet !!!

Shannons can be funny, they wont touch me for insurance om my daily, but are more than happy to insure my Mustang (im 24, No Accidents, completed skilled, and advanced drving courses), however they are happy to insure a friend, who is 19, 4 accidents in his xr6 wagon. They did a quote for my parents on thier daily (Toyota Rav 4) and with the discount from other policys with them (dads mustang, and harley), they were still $400 more than others. I have mine insured with AAMI, with mods listed(spoiler, lowered springs, cai, exhaust) and they dont have a problem, and the same premium as no mods, and they are the cheapest, as well have the lowest excess

With Shannons it depends on your age and how many kays you do a yera aswell.
You used to have to be a member of a club to be with them.
They know about all my mods, they dont care, unless they are not road legal.

I have the FPV with shannons with some mods and my XD with a mod list as long as my arm with Elders, neither had a hassle with it. In fact Elders actually insured the mods for a seperate sum! Before I turned 25 though, what a nightmare, AAMI was the best I found.

I hear ya...I'm 45 and have owned cars since 1979, had only one at fault claim when i was young and stupid...No major traffic infringements apart from 4 or 5 speeding tickets....When I bought the GT Shannons wouldn't touch me...Reason?...I've never owned a performance car before...Seems the 351ci XC GXL I had in the 80's isn't classed as a perfromance car...Pathetic!!

So I stuck with AAMI at a cost of $2 grand a year. Crikey, that reminds me it's friggin due to be paid Tuesday....Thanks for reminding me.!!!

Funny that. 14" rims were one of the factory options.

Having said that.... I remember once that they were questioning me to death on my rims... I kept saying they were factory, and they kept asking the bloody width, as if they were aftermarket....

They wouldn't insure me unless I CONFIRMED if they were 5.5" or 6" wide.. I can't remember who that was with, it was several years ago now... but what a bloody joke...

I had to go out to the car and remove a wheel to see and call em back...

All that for half an inch... (they ended up being 5.5" and I got the OK, if they were 6" it would have been a swift NO!)

But as to modded cars, I can't be bothered.... I can see someone being as honest as can be, and then getting busted on a technicallity caus they didn't mention something trivial as part of the mods....

The only 'mod' I have done is the paint job... and due to that, NRMA won't insure me. Wonder how long it will be when car COLOUR becomes a factor in the premium??? Wonder if they will take me then....

They were doing you a favour. If you had been in an accident, you had 6" wide rims and they noticed, you'd be up poo creek. Insurance would be void.
