Default Duratec 2.0 and 2.3 interchangeable oddities

This all stared when I was browsing US websites, but how much is changed from the 2.3 (as seen in the Mazda3 for example) and the 2.0 from the mk2 focus?

To increase the displacement, is it a longer stroke, or just bigger bore? Is the block height the same? Engine mounts? Cylinder head? Cams?

The real reason I want to know, is the availability of turbo manifolds, if the factory item from them Mazda MPS is a bolt on to the flange (and you'd hope it would be), it'd make turboing a stock focus that much easier. On that note, does anyone know what flange is on the MPS manifold?

I hear the manifolds have an identical face between 2l and 2.3l heads. Valves and ports are slightly larger on the 2.3l Soooo a logical thing to do is to swap the 2l head for the 2.3l. I also hear the 2l bottom end is better suited to rev. But to turbo with any decent output you would need to replace pistons and rods etc..

Of course why bother when the XR5 is both available and road legal... and responds to "tuning"..

For sure, this is just out of curiosity more than anything. The 2.3 head would be less than compatible if the bore sizes are different, but otherwise it'd probably drop on. The real reason, was if you can go to Mazda and grab a cast manifold off the shelf, you're making it very simple and reliable to turbo the factory car. it wouldn't be for massive power levels, and I certainly wouldn't go to the extent of having to crack the motor, more for midrange urge and a smoother drive. Supercharger is the other option

yeah there are a number of things you can do but if you don't have a sick budget then just enjoy the standard model. How fast do you want to 'spend'....?

Ah, a familiar topic! The bore sizes are the same in both engines, just a longer stroke in the 2.3L. Anyway, these are the figures;

2.3L
Bore: 87.5mm
Stroke: 94mm

2.0L
Bore: 87.5mm
Stroke: 83.1mm

Now, I had a look at the more extensive engine specifications for both (http://duratec.wikispaces.com/Duratec_Engine_Specs), and to answer Mullett's original question, the cylinder heads are different, cams are the same on paper.

And just as I was about to give up on power mods....

Question: Was the 2.3l engine in the Ford Escape a Duratec??? Potential swap?

Ah, see that's the kind of info we need! You'd have to assume that they used a different, taller block, although it's possible they didn't...that'd also lead you to assume that the heads are interchangable, with an improvement in flow. Leads back though, is the port sizing/spacing/bolt spacing the same on the 2.3 as the 2.0?

There is currently an Ebay auction of a Duratec 2.5 XR5 turbo engine...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-FORD-FOCU...QQcmdZViewItem

Looks a tad suspect to me, although they claim its from a rear end write-off. I was more interested to see that it has had 16 bids, as of today, and has already reached over $2000 and it still has until 2nd September...

That car was written off from the rear. There was a thread about it on here.

Definitely a rear end hit!!!

lol ouch!!! My bad, I must have missed that thread :O I figured it must have been a big rear ender... wasn't expecting that big!

Hopefully no one was hurt in that (please don't tell me there was someone in the back of that XR5).

Nah just the driver. Went to hospital in the back of an ambulance, but I think it was more for precaution than anything. Was shattered when I saw that photo!!! Such a nice car gone to waste. But, as you say, fortunately there was nobody in the back of it..
