Default "your security is crap"

Hows that for a message to the US Military!!

Quote:
A British computer expert who hacked into dozens of US military computers has lost his appeal against extradition in the European Court of Human Rights.
Gary McKinnon admitted breaking into 79 US Army and Navy computers.

He hacked into the Pentagon site from his north London flat and left a message saying "your security is crap".

When he was caught the 42-year-old claimed he was just looking for information on UFOs.

American officials claim he caused $700,000 worth of damage and threatened national security.

If extradited to the US, he faces up to 70 years in jail.
I would be assuming that $700,000 in "damages" is just money spent on changes to their networks to keep him out next time! :P

hackers are the most gutless of all the criminal's. Hopefully if he is prosecuted it will send a message to all the other scumbags like him.

What makes him gutless?

It would be a crazy amount of power to be able to do that, to hack into the pentagon, you could start WW3. You'd think it would be harder to get in.

gutless because they can do what most other criminals wish they could do :P

I dont admire him for what he did but some hackers, the bane of the government types(like some of the 'Anonymous' group).. the ones with political agendas etc always amuse me in how they prove their points(swamping servers and crashing them like microsofts and other huge companies, leaving funny messages like the above etc)

I think... that it is great in a way...because he was a non hazardous hacker... imagine some terrorist... who had those capabilities..its great to think that he may have saved us in some ways.. it just goes to show he is proving to them that they need a tighter security system..

mmm ham.

Good on him for being able to do that. If the US Defence Department can't stop some guy with a $1000 laptop and a $30 DSL connection getting into their systems, then they deserve to be hacked.

With the government's defence vulnerable, its was a matter of when, not if. Luckly the person who did it wasn't malicious.

Heres a more detailed article

Quote:
Military 'hacker' freed on bail

Gary McKinnon (seen through vehicle window) after the hearing

A British man arrested for allegedly carrying out the "biggest military computer hack of all time" has been released on bail by magistrates.

Gary McKinnon, accused of hacking into 53 US military and Nasa computers in 2001 and 2002, appeared before Bow Street magistrates in London.

The 39-year-old, of Wood Green, north London, will be back in court for an extradition hearing on 27 July.

His lawyer said he would contest extradition to the US "vigorously".

She told reporters: "Of particular concern to him is the treatment of other British nationals under the American judicial system which inspires little confidence.

"We believe that as a British national, he should be tried here in our courts by a British jury and not in the US."

Mr McKinnon, an unemployed computer systems administrator, is known on the internet as "Solo".

He is accused of hacking into computer networks operated by Nasa, the US Army, US Navy, Department of Defence and the US Air Force.

One of the networks belonged to the Pentagon. The US estimates the costs of tracking and correcting the problems he allegedly caused were around $1m (£570,000).

If he is extradited and found guilty, Mr McKinnon faces a long sentence in the US.

The Briton was indicted in 2002 by a federal grand jury on eight counts of computer-related crimes in 14 different states.

It claimed that he hacked into an army computer at Fort Myer, Virginia, obtained administrator privileges and transmitted codes, information and commands.

Unauthorised access

He is accused of then deleting around 1,300 user accounts.

The indictment alleged Mr McKinnon also deleted "critical system files" on the computer, copied a file containing usernames and encrypted passwords for the computer and installed tools to gain unauthorised access to other computers.

At the time of the indictment Paul McNulty, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said: "Mr McKinnon is charged with the biggest military computer hack of all time." Mr McKinnon's solicitor, Karen Todner, estimates he could face a maximum 70-year jail sentence if convicted in the US. She says he does not deny infiltrating US systems but says his motivation was to try to prove the existence of UFOs and to expose security failures.

Yeah cause it takes a real hero to jeapordize the lives of innocent civilians in a bank. Any other gems of wisdom you wish to impart? Or are you spent?

where there is a will, there is a way. Doesn't matter how tough u make the system to crack there will be someone that will find a backdoor. Unfortunately people like this lack alot of common sense. Able to hack into such a powerful country and such a high-tech security system, yet get caught? Badluck i hope he gets a long jail sentence.

he'll probably end up working for a government if he strikes a deal or high end computer security agency if he gets off earning the big bucks

A friend of mines son, at only 18 years of age, has a cadetship with a big IT firm, and was tasked with firewall checking their customers.

With reasonable but still PC based resources took him 24 hours to get into one of our big four banks.

If only he wasn't such a good kid. : I would have got him to put a $1 fee on everyones account for me. Dam ethics.
