Aussie flag on top of the westgate

Well I saw them doing something on the bridge yesturday morning, now this morning I see they have put up a massive aussie flag at the pinnicle of the westgate bridge pylon. Great to see some patriotism what?

what makes me smile though is that the installers were your typical hard working aussie blokes, wife beaters, beer gut, boots and a hard hat =)

Found a story about it dated 13th March 2007 where they said

Giant flags will be erected atop the two towering pylons at the centre of Melbourne's Westgate Bridge, the Victorian government has announced.

Premier Steve Bracks said flag poles will be installed in about 18 months, with the flags to measure about nine metres by 4.5 metres and to be illuminated at night.

"Placing the Australian and Victorian flags on top of one of Melbourne's most recognisable and iconic landmarks will give the community a sense of pride in their state and their country," Mr Bracks said today.

He also likened the new flags to those that adorn Sydney's Harbour Bridge, New York's Brooklyn Bridge and the Tower Bridge in London.

West Gate Bridge.

Two 10 x 5m flags were unfurled yesterday, similar in size to those on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Roads Minister Tim Pallas said it was a great day for Victoria.

But Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said installation of the flagpoles, which cost $350,000, was madness.

"This is an extraordinary proposition, and I'm not sure the Government's got its priorities right," he said.

"In Burwood, Vision Australia's School for the Blind is having $350,000 stripped from its funding. So that $350,000 of taxpayer money can be spent on erecting a flag on the West Gate Bridge.

"No one's crying out for a flag on the West Gate Bridge, but the school for the blind is crying out for having its funding restored.

"It's madness."

But Mr Pallas said: "Melbourne is one of the greatest cities in the world so it is only fitting that the flags of our state and our nation fly proudly from such an important point."

im all for it but as stated out victorian government has lots the plot and is spending money in stupid places for stupid reasons, they need a kick to the head, election promice... no tolls on east link HA not to mention all the other stunts they pull...
