Had an great time Rodderz,
The Finke was awesome to watch, my mate broke 2 conrods in his class 9 buggy, only 100 k's into the first day of the race, my other mate completed the race on his WR450. Finishing is a battle within itself.

Had a couple of big nights on the town, plenty of foreign back pakers in town.

Awesome experience. Didn't know people were going to the Finke. Sad year with the loss of life in the race. Still, that's the risks and at least you can pass on doing what you love. Should get the KTM 520 up there one year.....

In the pic it looks like you had speed alert on, what speed did you set it at? Or were you just setting a target to aim for?

You can set the speed alert for any speed up to 250km/hr, but i did find out that when it is in performance mode in the auto, it normally locks out 4th gear, but it WILL go into top gear by itself when it gets to 200km/hr.....

How many dumped cars did you count, i got 34 from adelaide to alice springs, although i may have missed some in the NT considiring that i was cruising at 225 KMH. Thats the top speed im comfortable with in the TX5, it will go faster but the steering starts to feel light at around 230

Just got back from my trip to Darwin for the Hidden Valley round of the V8 Supercars. Good race, bad result.

I had my wife and kids onboard on the way up, but they flew home from Darwin so my 'organic speed limiter' was gone. Here's a photo of the result.

yeah i remember reading that somewhere when looking through something on my XR.. performance mode will only engage the 4th gear above like 180km/h or something...

I remember thinking "damn!!" - thanks for showing it does work :p

I thought it wasn't to bad for an unmodified AU XR6, with 95,000km on the clock and on standard unleaded.

I know that the GT's are limited to 250km/h, but I think the XR6, XR6T and XR8 sedans are 240, probably wrong. The ute's are lower again because of the longer tailshaft.

These speed limiters can obviously be increased, we were overtaken by a Maloo ute and one of the guys in a GT went to 'play' with him. When he rejoined the rest of us he said that he was on his speed limiter (250) and this maloo absolutely sprinted away from him. Fun stuff.

it's ok to go playing up there but as with anything good it will be abused by the minority. imagine what will happen if too many "clowns" start killing themselves or innocent others when playing.
impressive to see the photos, but how far had you travelled unseeing while taking your "hero" photos?
inattention at those speeds is nuts and i'm glad i wasn't coming towards you guys.

230 for XR6T and XR8, XR6 might only be 210 I think. Check the owners manual.

Its like anything, you MUST be capable and your vehicle MUST be capable, i definately wouldnt want to be doing those kind of speeds in a clapped out old XC or HX Holden.
As for the "hero" photos dig, i thought it would be a good idea to get some proof of the achievement, its like scoring the hot chick at the night club, and scoring her G - String as a souvenier. lol

While I see your point, and agree with the risk re the photos, it's safer to do those speeds there then on most other high ways in Australia. The highways up there are generally flat, straight and have very little traffic. Yes people have been killed doing these speeds in the past, the F40 during the Cannon ball being 1. But with the distances involved, higher speed, 120-140km/h, is safer then 110km/h due to the bordem factor.

Yes but the F40 crash was due to driver error(stupidity),a long story,I was there.

i'm well aware of conditions of the Staurt and Barkly highways as i lived up there for 18 years. my concern is the inattention at twice the speeds you have mentioned and then plastering photos on a public forum, which will instigate more and more copy cat behaviour.
we all know how the government works, especially now the socialists up there have been given another term.
canonball was a different story all together.

The Northern Territory Government had decided that there are no speed limits on these particular roads, so no laws were broken, nothing was abused, no-one got hurt.

Dont imagine or predict or assume, look at the statistics....speed DOES NOT kill. If you want to predict anything, it can probably be that the NT will have the highest road fatalities given that 'every K over is a killer'. That has never been the case. You've been listening to too much government propaganda.

You're assuming I wasn't looking at the road. Do you honestly think I actually took my eyes off the road at these speeds, now THAT would be nuts.

So if I jumped off a bridge.............

Come on, you can listen to the revenue raisers or you can get out there and do if for yourself. My wife cracked up when we got to 180, so I slowed back down to 160 and cruised like that for hours. For a while she was quite nervous - at that speed we should already be dead 100 times over according to the Government. Within 1/2 hour she had gone back to sleep, having acknowledged that it was quite safe and comfortable. I asked the kids what speed they thought we were doing, and they said 'Dunno, normal speed'

Queensland has got it wrong. In the right car, and in the right conditions, with the right training and experience, speed does not kill.

i think you've missed my point entirely in trying to justify yourself. but thats ok you're entitled to do that.
just out of interest, what position did you finish the race in? i ask this because it is normally only race car drivers that have the "right training and experience" to do these sorts of speeds. i doubt you would have got that driving around on the QLD goat tracks.

Hmm handy to know the ute wont do over 230. Could explain why it wasn't gaining much when I pulled 5th. No point going to N.T to find out, I was close enough.
