noisey au wagon

My au wagon 1999 mod. is a lot more noisier than the xf wagon work vehicle. It is interior noise not exhaust. Would fairmont interior be a fix? or are there other methods? Maybe a whole new set of suspension rubbers?

Tyres causing the noise?

what sort of noise? i asssume its from the dash due to your question about monty dash upgrade. is it squeaking from the dash? if so theres a couple of causes of this, one is the center dash facia where the radio sits, the panel rubs on the rest of the dash in some spots. another one i found was the directional air vents in the dash. mine occasionally rattle and squeak in the housing. not really much you can do about either AFAIK, there may be some1 here who has solved the problem though, as it is common. all most of us do though is just crank the tunes....never here the noises then

If it's just a general sorta road noise, it could be stuffed tyres (feathered etc) or even wheel bearings. I've had a few cars that have worn out the wheel bearings, and they get damn loud towards the end!

Its road noise, BTW all my tyres and bearings are OK. Could it be lack of sound deadening in the body panels and bonnet and roof?

I've fixed such squeaks with a spray of silicone spray on the hinges / plastic pins. It's been over a year and they've not returned. Apparently that's all Ford do if people have concerns.

Another helpful forum member gave us the helpful tip a few years ago, but I can't remember who it was.

Something is definitely wrong. I've had a few AU's, plenty of XF's and a squillion of the abortions in between, and there is no way that all being well that an XF is quieter than an AU.

Tyres in particular can still look good, but some as they wear down just get very noisy, or maybe they've feathered or worn badly causing some noise.

I would look very closely again at tyres and wheel bearings. Both will cause extra road noise.

The tyres are firestone. I willput the car on the jack tomorrow and spin up the front wheels with a starter motor that I use for my vintage racing motorbike and find if the bearings are OK.

Also check the diff fluid level/condition

I have spun the the wheels and there is no bearing noise. the diff. is also quiet. the tyres are Goodyear GA plus and it is definately tyre noise inside the wagon. Is the brand of tyres the problem or is the lack of insulation in the car body? All sugestions taken on board.

you will find that the wagons have more road noise than a sedan because the back it more open....if your tyres/bearings etc are ok you could always put some sound deadening under the carpet and in doors etc...ive been looking at doing this to mine but havnt got around it yet.....
