some pics of what was under the timing case...
first of all, the timing case is broken into 3 peices... the chain guide on the intake side is connected to nothing with both ends showing damage. there was a peice of metal stuck in the crankshaft gear. there are some major metal grinding marks on the inside of the timing case. the pics :P

Geez, looks to be a fair ole amount of damage there. So, whats the go from here, are you goin to full repair/replace the parts? or maybe a new engine?
atleast you got a fair few clicks outta the engine before it blew up.

What a mess. Nothing there that cant be fixed though.
I picked up a new timing cover from for for about $80, but it was slightly different to mine and I had to get an EL chain tensioner. Also good idea to replace the timing gears when you do the chain and guides. If it is anything like mine you will have heaps of stuff in the sump and maybe in the oil pickup as well. Good luck getting it all back on the road.

Just pull the engine. Its less work, honistly. I would also be pulling the oil pump out and cleaning all the oil galeries. Way to much work. Just pull the motor, replace it with a low KM El/au motor. Then u can play with your EF head for as long as you like ;)
-excuse the bad english, this was typed ion 3sec bursts, damn boss watching me.

if an AU engine was easier to install.. i'd consider it.
EL engine just doesn't do much for me since its basically what i have and i have no idea what its like. atleast if i replace what i plan too.. it'll be all good

Hmmm, interesting...
I'd want to see it up close, but it looks like maybe the bottom half of the guide snapped, allowing the chain to thrash around a bit (breaking a few things in the process) and making it skip some teeth. That's the only thing i can think of... |

You really did do a great job of it John! You'll have to keep the parts as a talking point for sure!
I bought a new timing cover for the EA engine from Ford and it set me back about $175! They aren't cheap, but for peace of mind I thought that it was worth it. Apparently they are an updated version to stop the leaks they are prone to.

There's already a timing case lined up (s/h).
So still need a new balancer, timing kit, gaskets, etc. and then it'll be right to go back together ;) |

Well, we'll be buying a full timing kit. (well, john will be. i'll just watch :P lol) So that will have timing gears, guides, chain and all in it.
We'll probably just get a changeover balancer (coz i don't have an au one to give you - Sorry! :( ) |

I just remembered I have EF rocker gear from the taxi John, you know how well that car went from the demo I gave you guys lol. Let me know if you want any of it, it's clean as a whistle but you'd want to change the lifters.
I'll say it again though after looking at the pics, I'd be looking at replacing the motor. I would have had one for you if I raised my hand and bidded for the EF Fairmont at auctions that went for $500!! That car was mint but I was too slow with my number thing. Sundeep |
