Alkybrown, if you want to avoid engineering hassles, you can put a 2.0L OHC Cortina engine in an Escort very easily. They respond well to modifications and are a reasonably toey motor for such a light car. I had one in a Capri a number of years ago and it was able to match a VL Commodore in accelleration (manm that WAS a long time ago....) They are cheap and easy to get parts for too. They also go very well with a Celica 5 speed gearbox and also will bolt straight on to the standard 1.6L
belllhousings.

These engines were originally fitted as an option in MK2 Escorts (you should look in to the Lotus twin cam heads as a modification too, which were fitted to the Escort rally cars), so your state Dept of Transport, whomever they may be, won't give you any gyp if you use this engine.

Good luck with your search.

No I dont think the 5 speed bolts to the 1.6L bellhousing(unless its a home made modded one) you will find it will be dellow automotive bellhousing.
And the lotus twin cam head is not compatable with the 1600 kent crossflow or the 2ltr pinto engines.
Different block, totally different bank account as well $$$$$$$

As for engine recommendations ,I agree the 2ltr pinto engine will be your best bet for a tight budget and ease of installation
