Used to live near a river out west. When the river was in full flood, you'd often get a few heading up towards the house.
One was digging in right next to the floodwater, so I grabbed the welding gloves & relocated him.
The gloves did a great job.

Depending upon who is rostered to be on call at any one time you could either get a person with a genuine interest in the well being of native animals who is quite capable or some unemployed cat woman who couldn't tie her own shoe laces. Saying they want you to dig the echidna out before they come and get it is just laziness pure and simple and shows a complete disregard for the welfare of the animal.

don't know about feeding habits, but that little fella surely would be hungry by now? he must be pretty stressed.

and good on you for wanting to help.
i think it would be hungry and being that it is just out the front door of the house it has taken residence i would be thinking it is still stressed

thanks for the input

My wife and I are with WIRES, it is a totally volunteer organization which is funded by the volunteers and local fund raising. We rescue, care for and hopefully release native animals back into the environment.

We currently have 2 adult blue tongues and 11 baby's in care along with a top notch pigeon. We recently released a kookaburra, several adult blue tongues, 4 feather tail gliders + a range of other native birds.

You will need to visit the website to get the local contact number in your area.

www.wires.org

They should have someone who is trained in monotremes and will be look for signs of injury, be able to care and release the animal.

Icat is also correct, the biggest killer of native animals is stress, if you do manage to get it out place it on a box, well ventilated, keep it is a dark very quiet place as well.

Cheers
Mark

I may have missed something but isnt it a bit weird that they wont come and get it until you dig it out? I thought the idea of organisations like that was to do all of that work so as to look after the animal. I have visions of people handing over an echidna on a shovel in small bits saying "most of it's there we missed a bit but she'll be right" :

Good to hear...

Some late advice if anyone else has similar probs - local councils will lend a cage out (free) for the purpose of catching feral cats etc, so maybe it could have been used in this situation if the porcy went wandering at night...
