You'd be surprised... just come over and have a look at the M5 Tunnel, or the failed Paramatta - Chatswood rail link which is now only going to be Paramatta - Epping from what I've been hearing. That's awesome work, scrap the most important part of the train line, and Paramatta - Epping is cheaper and quicker by bus anyway.

Oh, and just take a look at the way State Rail & City Rail in NSW & Sydney Metropolitan Area operates...

"Train Due Out in 3 min"

3 min later

"Train Due Out in 0 min"

5 min later

"The 10:45 train to <wherever> is approximately 15 minutes late, City Rail apologizes for any incovenience caused"

20 minutes later.. train finally arrives.

Great public transport system :

State Rail is long gone.

If only we could go back to the days of State Rail....when everything worked well and it all came under the one banner.

Now, due to corporatisation THEN privatisation of everything bar City Rail & Countrylink, everything is a shambles. Every company out there works against each other and not WITH each other like the old days.

It seems the Hunter Valley is the only place that get mega $$ spent. Everything runs like clockwork there so as not to disturb the coal program.

*cough cough* care to explain the quite extensive tunneling project thats been going on across lane cove river Deli Rd? or the tunnel work cnr Boundary Rd/Pacific Hwy, not to mention the tunneling work being done just north of Epping station....
cheaper??? have they actually announced the fares for this journey?
& as for the quicker bit - how often have you actually driven this piece of road in morning peak hour???? tis usually quicker to WALK then go by road!!!

Funny how they could run spotless trains on time all though the Olympics, so as not to spoil any of Bobs photo opportunities but they can't be stuffed providing the same level of service for those who pay for it.

But then bob was spending the education budget on the Olympics too. Nothing like priorities. :

Actually, last year, I used to catch a bus from Epping to Paramatta for work every day, down Pennant Hills Road, then Church Street to the James Ruse Drive intersection, then walk from there. Let me tell you, its quicker then any train trip I've ever done.

Also, if you notice, I said they'd scrapped it from what I've been hearing. I never said it was concrete fact. Oh, and you think it won't be expensive? My entire bus trip for one day, that was two busses each way, cost me about $5.75. One-way ticket to central from here (Blacktown) costs me $4.40. To Paramatta is $4.00, and Epping its $4.40. You can bet that it will be ungodly expensive, just like the rest of City Rail's fares are.

Steffo, with all the problems some people have, if a frequent late train trip is all Bob Carr is to blame for, then he served you very well for the last 10 years.

We always hear people not happy with there Governments and leaders at any level; the other side of this view is, we are told its democracy this is why they are in power.
Bob Carr is the longest serving State premier in NSW ever.. The people of NSW have overwhelming supported Bob Carr for 10 years in democracy.
Many loved and Voted for him, History will show he left on his own terms, was never voted out by the NSW voters. Regardless which side of politics you support he will be remembered as a productive forward thinking leader that stood for 10 years.
He will be back..

You do have a point there... coming up to election times he had a regular guest spot on Sydney's Nova 96.9FM, with Merrick and Rosso in the mornings, and I tell you - that may have won him a fair few voters.

He's a pretty funny bloke and he dealt with all kinds of shyte being put on him, and sometimes got his own back on M&R. The funniest thing I remember was the Bob Carr Impersonator ringing up on air and talking to him, it was hard to tell who was who! :nutsycuck

Although the reason I didn't vote for them in the last election was our local hospital problems. How the hell can you just shut down a maternity unit???!!!

Australia has a wonderful unmanipulated uncorrupted democratic voting system.

Two questions:

1) Name TWO government forms that can be legally filled in with an erasable pencil (hint one is a ballot)
2) Name TWO things you can do in Australia that are specific to your identity but do not require proof of identity (hint one is vote).

Steffo, you think bus and rail fares are expensive? Catch a taxi. Private vehicle - price of petrol, parking meters/stations, insurance? Compared with major cities around the world, Sydney has actually one of the lowest fare structures on a per kilometres travelled basis for public transport. Think I'm making this up? Read the Parry report (table on page 51 under 'Fair Fares & Efficient Subsidies'). Don't start an argument with me, I work in that area. If you still think the figures are suss, go to Tokyo and find out the hard way...

Agreed. Anyone can criticise the government in power all day every day. I wonder, honestly, how many of them actually come up with improvements or suggestions, forward them and cc them to the Opposition? They need all the ammo they can get, being incumbent for the last decade or so.

Or of course the polls have pretty much determined that for the last how many years.

Only one poll coming along that mateers and NSW Labor wont win it, and they would have have even less chance with Bodgey Bob still there. Its a forgone conclusion and Bob will sneak of into the night, caring little for the State, for his party, or about the damage done, still believing he is god's gift.

The state has a bit more to be concerned about than a few manic rantings about rail ticket prices, an itememised list would be very long indeed!

Regardless of how long the list is, let's see how many will put their hand up and help tackle these problems.

Carr made it impossible to tackle the problems! That will change.

eg: In NSW at a time of water shortage it is illegal to fill a swimming pool from your own rain water catchment, You must purchase water.

A Desalination plant that all experts said was lunacy was rushed through, with the the cost offset 2years, guess which government he was trying to lumber with his white elephant.

The only growth industries in NSW are government backed backed sponsored monopolies such as toll roads.. check the figures..

A rail service crippled entirely yet only 5 years ago it could run a 10 minute service for the Olympic games.

Record taxation!, yet spending on infrastructure is non existant. And beleive me many of us ARE doing something about it.

Take the spin away and what is the Carr legacy? A state far more damaged when Carr left than when he arrived. Car can continue his self belief that he is like Lincoln but the public perception is a very different one.

Carr government great achievments, none come to mind. The biography will certainly be much more damning than any Carr autobiography

No, I think busses are fine, its trains that are expensive, especially when you consider the kind of service.

My latest City-Rail mis-adventure:

Yesterday (Sat 30 July 2005), I was going from my place (Blacktown) to my mate's place (Chatswood). So I get to the station, two trains, one coming in 25 min (Syd Terminal express, stopping Paramatta, Strathfield, Central) and the other in 16 min (Limited Stops, Seven Hills, Westmead, Paramatta, Harris Park, Granville, Lidcombe, Strathfield, Redfern, Central).

Turns out, the North Shore line was stuffed, so they said, change at central for busses. Ok. I was going to get the one coming in 16 min because it was nearly 10 min earlier then the express, and I wasn't really in any big hurry. So, 16min to go... 10min to go... 5min to go... 1min to go... 0min to go... 0min to go... 0min to go...

By the time it came, the express was 2 min away, so I waited for that. And even it was five minutes late.

I'd rather sit in a car for 3 hours in bumper to bumper then ever take a train again, especially a Sydney train. So sick of Public Transport...

Doesn't explain why the train came.. 10 minutes later then it was supposed to.. to Blacktown station.. at the entire other side of the city from what was happening there...

Its quite annoying, waiting for a train, when the bloody thing says "due out in 0 min" and its beein saying that for 10 - 15 min.

Any if you payed attention to my post, the issue was the superlate train, not the trackwork
