Thumbs up NZ To Become Domestic Not International Trip

Easing travel regulations

Mr Rudd and Mr Key also hope to come to an agreement within a year over relaxing travel regulations for those moving between Australia and New Zealand.

"It involves security questions, immigration questions, customs questions, quarantine questions ... so that someone jumping on a plane here in Australia going to New Zealand goes through one set of arrangements and then can jump off in New Zealand at a domestic terminal and then the reverse for New Zealand travellers coming to Australia," Mr Rudd said.

Very interesting. I assume that will mean you can travel there without a passport? Not sure how successful it would be though as it brings a load of problems, namely how do they track you and your stay without a passport/visa.

I don't see the need.. I travel to Aus every now and then and it's easy enough, from plane to taxi in under 30minutes, everytime.

Been in the pipeline many years, see also 'Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement'.

NZ is Australia's eastern Islands, or we are NZ's western:-)

Nope, it's just a really large island off NSW's coast!

Why NZ? One would have thought with how many bloody Asians we have running around we already had domestic flights between Aus & Asia. :

I travel to NZ quite a bit and never find it too much of a drama, typically just walk through with no queue. I would be happy to not have to be at Auckland Airport 2hrs before my flights though - 7am flight home means out of bed at 1am Bris time :(

I hope this doesn't mean goodbye to Duty Free...

From memory, New Zealand was almost incorporated as part of Australia just prior to Federation via a referendum. Western Australia could have become a separate country at that time. Mind you, Australian history was many, many years ago for this little black duck...

Came in about the same time in the late 70's ...Aust brought in a requirement for NZers to have a passport first...NZ followed suit soon afterward...

EDIT : 1981 was the year the passport requirements were brought in
