Hi guys I am new to this forum, I have a 07 LS XR5 Turbo and it has done 45,000 kms. I have had the car from almost new, had done 7000kms when I bought it.
The bottom end bearings have gone and Ford are having trouble fixing the problem...it's been six weeks so far...still have two more weeks to wait for three conrods to arrive. Ford cannot repair the engine it has had to go to an engine specialist to be assessed and fixed....under warranty tho. The problem started with a ticking noise in the engine and they thought it was the lifters or the gudgeon pin at first. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before as I am running out of patience waiting for the car. |

Man that truly is disappointing news. However given the reliable record in both the XR5 and all Volvo applications, the engine has proven to be very reliable. As far as the engine itself is concerned at moderate engine speeds the mechanical loading of the crankshaft drive remains modest despite high operating pressures (being a boosted engine). The XR5 engine has a maximum rating for the pistons’ speed of travel of 18.1 meters per second at 5500 rpm. Many experts regard 25 metres per second as the critical speed.
The power development of the five cylinder engine also ensures smooth running by its very design. Whilst four cylinder engines can face noticeable second order inertial forces, a crankshaft with five pistons as well as five forged and balanced rods is not affected by them. The second-order inertial forces have been successfully cancelled out by two counterweights on each of the crankshaft’s pins. The engine’s alloy cylinder block is fixed to the ladder-shaped, cast aluminium bed-plate. This helps provide the six crankshaft bearings with solid support, which is of fundamental importance because of the high operating bearing loads of such turbo-charged engines. Given all this and it’s record in other cars (this is not a new engine), I’d say you have just suffered a case of bad luck. I hope it’s all sorted for you very soon as they are a great car.

Thanks for the tip I will try that. Interesting that you said that you know of two engines needing replacing as Ford told me that mine was the first that they have had any problems with....oh well another lie...must be because I am female. The car is silver too. Cheers
