Default Classic Submarine Movies

Hey All,

Can anyone here suggest some classic good submarine movies? Currently my list stands at:

- Crimson Tide
- Hunt for Red October
- K-19
- Das Boot
- Down Periscope (not a classic but funny none the less)
- U-571

Any other classic's I'm missing?

U-571 had potential but was let down by the hollywood sausage factory.

Das Boot is excellent but I would of loved some more action (ie torpedoing ships)

Haven't got any to add to the list, but The Hunt for Red October is the best submarine movie ever made. Awesome!

Crimson tide was also good, but not as good! K-19 was okay.

That about covers it. Though i saw a cool one on SBS like 2 months ago it was South Korean, but suprisingly good.

There are a couple of old black and white ones WW2 vintage British ones you see on ABC from time to time- "Above Us the Waves" was pretty good with the mining of the Tirpitz. "Run Silent, Run Deep" was an American one from the 50s, that I could really get into. I also remember one about the Dutch submarine during WW2, cant remember the name but it was from the 40s.

Don't watch Das Boot until you have read the book.

How about Under Siege?

It made me laugh so hard. If you watch all the shots of Steven Seagal, they only show him from the chest up, or he constantly has something covering up his big gut

What about this classic...The enemy Below.
Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens. (spelling?)
Classic US Escort Destroyer vs U-Boat.

You got Crimson Tide at the top of yr list there, and they talked about this movie on the bus before boarding the sub.

Read the book for Das Boot, thats well worth it and watch the remastered digital version in german with subs on if you need em.
You really get a feel for the movie, especially when watched in its native language. This film was made in German and dubbed to english.
Its long as hell, but is much more realistic as to how life really was for them back then.
It wasnt all sinkin destroyers an freighters an gettin depth charged etc. The Atlantic is a huge ocean, and convoys were sent as clandestinly as possible so u-boats had to find convoys first.
No satellite radars etc then.
The best they had was primitive low band ground/sea level based radar for close up action and the radio for longer range action.

Das Boot is the best, but another goody is Murphys War with Peter O'Toole.

Everything about subs fascinates me.....especially Cold War and later nuclear subs.......
I was watching a doco on the dismantling of an old Russian Typhoon class a few nights ago (at 173 meters in length, and 4 storeys high with TWO nuclear reactors.... the biggest ever built).....man...what a job :yeees:
Did anybody see the doco "Titanic's Nuclear secrets" with Robert Ballard telling how he had to search the wrecks of 2 sunken US subs?......:

Hmm... Didn't even know Das Boot was a book made into a movie. Thats another thing I'll have to read now. lol.

Yeah subs are fascinating to me and I've had the chance to look around the Collins Class subs a couple of times. It's certainly tempting me to move to Perth and join the Sub Squadron.

Das Boot is still used by Audio Specialists to demonstrate 5.1 sound.
You can hear the rivets popping and bouncing around the room.

The Hunt for Red October would have to be the best in my opinion, and Crimson Tide is pretty good as well.

Ooooh oooh, and that episode of The Simpsons where Homer is in charge of the sub, that was pretty cool too. Although maybe not quite in the same league.

If you dont mind Black and White try "Above us the Waves" although this one is about midget subs in WW2

(My Dad was in the Royal Navy so I had to watch it when I was a little tacker)

You guys have all failed to pick up Operation Petticoat.

THE most hilarious sub movie. Set in WW2, involved a buggered diesel submarine painted pink. Had Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in it.

Submerged.
True story.
Quote:
Squalus sank mysteriously in 240 feet of cold Atlantic water on a test dive off the Isles of Shoals. Twenty-six men from our Shipyard drowned when the engine room flooded. Billed as the only successful submarine rescue, the Squalus story centers on Swede Momsen, an iconoclastic Navy engineer who designed the diving suits, escape hatch and diving bell that facilitated the rescue of all 33 surviving crewmen.
