Default Local Knowledge - Lower Portland

Hey Team,

I'm being sent off for a week long seminar at some 'retreat' in Lower Portland, NSW. Is anyone from there/knows the place? Is it banjo country?

Do I need to take my own supplies of Marlboros/beer/recreational drugs, or is it a metropolitan centre where that sort of thing can be obtained? I'll have no car/independent transport... It seems a bit like school camp.

When I signed up for this, I assumed it was a junket in Sydney for a week... Whoops.

Thanks

Nick

Yeah, that's the one... So I should basically resign myself to being found some time later in the year in a shallow grave by a fire trail?

na the fire trails are well kept, more likely off a walking track in the national park

theres not a horble lot there but your required supplies shouldnt pose a problem

In further awful news, apparently the venue is across the river from whatever passes for civilisation, and you don't get to go back and forth on the ferry by request - You need to get all your supplies on the way in.

BRISBANE MAN FOUND

The horribly mutilated body of a Brisbane union organiser has been found in a shallow grave by the side of a fire trail in central NSW.

Reports indicate the man was last seen attempting to swim to Wiseman’s Ferry to purchase cigarettes. A colleague said “Somehow I knew it would end like this. But at least I’ve got his car space now.”

Amusingly, you won't be far from Sackville. What a great name for a place...

You need backup?
That sounds suss.
Was thinking I could do with a week off work. We can drive down in the truck and I can wait out the front and run over anyone that looks like they may be burying you.
Just realised I don't have any holidays available though.

Your thinking Portland near Lithgow.
Green Machine is talking Lower Portland out near Wisemans Ferry. Miles apart but both Banjo Country!
The ferries around there are vehicle ferries. If you have a car available they run all the time. It might be worth it if there is a few of your going to chip in on a rent a wreck in Sydney. Besides geting supplies there are a couple of good pubs around the area to check out. The Wisemans Ferry pub and the St Albains pub.

Ha Ha Ha - this could be the site of the old "Young Explorers Camp" There is a floating platform with a rope across the creek.

Regardless - that part of the world is a little isolated, thats what is nice about it.

we used to ride dirt bikes in that area, from Rylstone thru the mountains to wisemans ferry and stay at the pub over night then find a different track home. great country for dirt bikes , 4x4s etc if you can still use the tracks. very senic country if you like big rivers, mountains, cliffs etc. if your a city lad that likes latte coffee shops and need the sound of traffic to get to sleep - then its probably the wrong place for you .
