Default 3.9 LSD Prices.. Under $2000

I went to a local Transmission place today to get a quote for 3.9's. Walking in with $1600 expecting it too be enough.... sigh. I was wrong.

I got a quote for $2000, to get 3.9:1 LSD..

Is there anyone that knows a better price?

wtf? Thats insane. I bought a 3.45 LSD disc to disc for $500. I hear diff gears are about $700 new. Then all you need is to fit it.

Still, I assume that is a complete diff with new bearings, rotors, axles and gears yes?

Hmm it does seem a little steep.

Sounds about right for what I think he asked for.
You may be talking second hand/used.
I think he is talking walk in walk out recond/rebuilt????

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but $2k for new gears and lsd fitted, $650 mentioned in above post is for oil and labour only.

2k seems about right, if a little on the high side. My mate had a new 3.7 LSD supplied & fitted to his VT for about $1800.

new diff centres u can pick up between 500 to 600 inc carrier housing, then hunt around for ur own diff gears, if u dont mind second handies (as long as they look good) for under 300. carrier bearings and oil didnt cost me more than $50. because u would be using new gears and centre u would have to get the shimmed correctly (pinion gear to housing) and then both out shims for backlash.

perhaps Im reading it wrong. Personally I cant justify that sort of cash for a diff unless it was a 9" or something. Im probably going off prices from 1995 so it could why Im thinking this way.

Price is too high.

I had my diff rebuilt with 3:7s at the start of this year for $1,200. LSD would have added about $650 IIRC.

I would have thought 2K tops.

If they supplied NEW gears and a NEW LSD centre, then that price for a drive in drive out conversion is about right.

If anything is different to what I've described above, then it's too much IMO.

Personally, I'd just grab a secondhand 3.45 LSD, and then change gears in that if need be.

It would be a drive in drive out they supply everything.

I have considered buying a second hand lsd but cannot find one for a reasonable price. I may just have to suck it up and pay the 2000.. It will be all brand new with some form of warranty too.

yeah thats a bit much keep an eye out for some gears on ebay or on here and then get an lsd whole diff for like $600 and get it rebuilt with the gears fitted and should be about $650 to rebuild lsd and fit into housing just dont let them take 9it out of car its easy as and theyd charge probly 4 hours to remove and refit.
cheers josh.

New Kazz - $1600
3.9 gears $700
Bearings, oil and assembly $400
R&R diff cradle $400

Just a little more than $2000 but probably worth it I suppose?

seeing the prices and the qaulity difference Kaaz seams the better way to go, Yeah its about 1k more than the original quote for new gears but got damn it would last longer than a normal LSD specially the way i drive.

Kaaz would be sick, but I just can't comprehend 3k on a diff build for a moderately powered car!

But then I also wouldn't spend 2k on a standard LSD build seeing as the LSD would be screwed in no time anyway!

To start with you can't just bolt 3.9 gear set into a 3.45 centre. The pinion/centres run on a different offset so you have to first of all buy a 3.73 centre out of say a Skyline. Then you can put your 3.9s in. If anyone can do this conversion using good quality parts, rebuilt and guaranteed, for under $2000 they will get a lot of business. Dunno how long they will stay around though to honour their warranty?????

Would this be compatible for my AU S1??

How much would a brand new kaaz setup be?

And would any tranmission place be able to order in their setup?

Well I ended up going the kaaz. So far it has given me a fair bit of trouble.. Though to be oil related but is coming back again..

I will be taking it back in 500km and getting the center pulled apart to make sure its not it.

Why dont you actually go to someone who has a clue? Most places in Wagga know nothing about good performance orientated parts.

I bought my diff off a guy on here, 3.9 LSD, just rebuilt, new cones and bearings. $450. Freight was around $130 as it was from Sydney. Labour to fit it was $200. They ended up pulling it all apart and putting it in my diff housing with new oil, checked everything to confirm it was new, made sure it was tight, $200. Cant complain about that. $780 for a 3.9 LSD.
This is from A1 differentials at Southport. Only thing is being old ricer gears, they are a little noisy at times, but with a 3 inch exhaust it doesnt worry me, lol.
Its also pretty damn tight, and if your doing a real tight turn using even a touch of accelerator, the inside wheel will spin slightly.

I had 3.9's put in around a fortnight ago, cost me exactly $1560 drive in drive out. This included brand new gears, bearings and LSD cones. They even dropped me off at work and came and picked me up when it was finished.
