Smile Over Quoting

How come most people on here over quote so much?

I've noticed quite a bit recently, even from moderators.

Would it be necessary to quote the post you are replying to if it is the last one?

Seems like a lot of wasted bandwidth if you ask me.

Anyone elses opinion?

I only find it's an issue when people quote a post with photo's, over and over. The page "jumps" while they load and can be really annoying especially when all you want is to read the last post.

i agree with Jack, annoying as hell when people quote someone and include alllll the img codes...

especially when someone quotes another member who just posted 20 pics of their car, includes all the pics in the quote, and then says "nice car"....

i don't think it'll ever change though, unless mods start editing posts to remove doubled up images.

I tend to agree... one image is sorta ok, but multiple are an issue...

But i tend to read in a reply that when someone uses a qoute, it is either directed at that user, or is using that information and replying/adding to it. A 2nd paragraph then opens up the reply to being a general comment.

One possible suggestion is to modify the source code data to automatically remove [img] code tags from the qoute, thus elimating this issue.

I have been doing this for some time, if you see one hit the report button to have it rectified.

Perhaps have a stroll through the Contemporary Aus Fords and FPV F6, XR6T and G6ET forums. You'll find heaps.

I quote so you don't have to trapes throuh all the thread to find out what I am on about. Thats the whole idea of it.

I also remove the images from the quote as I find it annoying too.

Cheers

To a degree, Micksxboxmods, but quoting from throughout the thread is fine. But to quote the post you are replying to isn't necessary really.

Or is it?

of course it is, otherwise you have to specify who you are referring to which is annoying more so than the quoting..

quoting wads of images though is annoying.

I don't reckon it is if it's the very next post.

As I said earlier, if it's in reply to a post that is further back in the thread then absolutely, but if it's a reply to the last post there's no point.

what happens if someone sneaks a post in before you? It can and does happen, but were are getting pedantic over semantics.

Quoting is necessary, how else do you directly reply to someone?

P.S, PHANTMXR6, may I ask why you place a smiley face above every single post of yours? I've been wondering for a while...

So let my get this straight.

You don't like the way people quote so much, as you believe it is a waste of bandwidth, however you felt the need to create a WHOLE THREAD about the topic?

Irony much?

Oh no, another 5KB on a server probably loaded with a few 1TB drives.

Who said I don't like it?

I just don't understand it?

I don't care if the owners of this website like a great deal of bandwidth. Doesn't cost me anything. Each to their own I guess. I was just wondering why there is so much of it.

Other forums have moderators that delete quotes from posts directly above a reply and this forum doesn't.

Just curious is all???

Do you actually realise how much time it would take the moderators of this site to actually do that?

I wouldn't think it would take any longer than moderators from other sites, unless the system that is used on this site is hugely different.

Also education of the majority would cut down on it.

I realise it may be a time consuming thing to do if it has gotten out of hand, but once under control again it wouldn't be too hard to manage, would it?

1300 hundred odd posts a day to check?

Meh I got better things to do sorry.

If people want to quote text then its up to them, if they are quoting pictures then when found we will edit post.

Some things have priorities.

If this thread stops one person stop using the quote system for images then I am happy

You do realised how little bandwidth plain text actually uses right? Each letter is 1 bit, so to even get to a kilobyte, it is 8000 characters. If the excessive quoting was images, yeah, it'd eat bandwidth, but just text by itself would have to be millions of characters being excessively quoted for it to be a real issue...

That's my opinion anyway...
