I just went a look at a EL Futura S pack wagon for my self and what a heap. He told me it was all orginal never been in a prung. never knew a futura S Pack existed.
Here is a short list of issues I found that concerned me by looking at this heap for 15 minutes. It claimed to only done 117,000kms look like it had done double that. The dash screws were missing. All panel security stickers missing. Tail gate shut bent. Number plates had LPG sticks but no LPG in the car. Idled rough as guts. Thumbed into second gear with a shutter. Bad vibration in the wheel when driving. Shutter in the brakes (just had new front disc and pads) Oil ****ing out from the rocker cover. sratched all over. He want $9500 for it. I told him I would give him $7000 with RWC and if it passes a mechanic inspection. Why can't people say the way they are. instead of wasting your time going and looking at it.

I wouldn't even pay $7,000 for it if it comes across as "junk"

I just bought a EFII for a mate (with his money).
It took ages as dealers are dodgy so you have to read through them, also I hate gtoing from house to house for private sale. We found one. It only had minor imperfections that my mate could live with. Mechanicaly was A1. Buying used cars takes time. :( But worth it!

I am straight forward an honest with the sale of my car. It only has one fault and it was the first thing I mentioned. Unfortunately, it means no sale as yet. If only everyone was honest with eachother, everyone would be happier I reckon.

For $9,500- you could get yourself a nice AU, possibly one for $7000- if you look hard enough.

One thing to remember here is the car is 8 years old. A lot can happen in 8 years. If you want a better car? Buy something thats 2-3 years old.

By the sounds of it that one's a dodgy. If the dash screws are missing it may mean somebody has messed with the cluster and we all know how easy it is to swap them over in an EF/L - which may explain why the car looks older than the kms it says.

Buying used cars takes time. :( But worth it! [/QUOTE]
It pays never to be in to much of a hurry to buy a second hand car. Also take a writing pad & write down what is actully on the car if you leave a deposit and make it clear that you know what there as some shifty sellers might try to change some parts over .( eg poor quality speakers. spare tyre & etc I set of keys only) buickman |

I did exactly that when I purchased the XB. I knocked $700 off the price as I showed the owner on paper what needed doing. I also stated thats just what I can see. There could be more and gave my offering price.

Hey, my brother is selling his EF wagon in a short while. It's done a head gasket at the moment but we are getting that replaced ASAP. It's had a lot of maintenance done to it recently (new exhaust, welsch plugs, brakes and tyres too I think etc) and he won't want much for it. If you're interested then send me a PM for more info.
I know what you mean though. Try looking at cars with a female and see the crap that some buyers spin. We managed to knock off a fair whack of the price due to the seller talking up the car before we test drove it! You'll find one in the end. Good luck with the car hunting! Cheers

It still stuns me that a car that is less then 10 years old can be so far gone already!?!
I expect to find some faults with a car manufactured in the 80s or earlier, but something manufactured in the 90s, well, I don't think there is any real excuse for a car being that far gone...

On average after 150,000 everything starts giving out. IE suspension. I know my EL's asking for it's 3rd exhaust at the moment, it's on it's 3rd head gasket, 2nd radiator, 3rd fuel pump and I refuse to fix it anymore as it costs more than the XB, my oldHyundai and my Madza to maintain.
Mine has 220,000k's on it.

Wow, I guess they just don't make them like they used to... :(
I drove an Escort for years and did over 100,000kms in it, and had very little need repairs or replacement in all that time.

Reminds me of when I went to test a BA XT a while ago. The dealer told me it was a one owner (the one owner being Hertz Rent a Car!) with low kms.
OK I thought lets go for a burn. Not even 50M from the dealer it went to change to 2nd gear (auto) as I was accelerating, went into neutral, gave the motor a big buzz (my foot was half down) and BOOM! it finally slotted into 2nd gear. The noise it made was incredible and it spun the wheels nicely. Right away the salesman says, "Oh they all do that when they are cold." I just kept quiet and kept driving trying to not to crack up laughing. After another minute it did it again and I also noticed the brakes shuddered, plus a rubber plug was missing (I assume?) from the firewall which was letting heaps of noise and wind in from near my feet. When we got back to the dealer I just quietly left telling him I would get back to him.. Do they think people are stupid? |

But hey, it's probably the original transmission, and I know it hasn't been serviced in a few years, so I'm not suprised a 20 year old transmission is doing that. In a car no more then a few years old... Well... I wouldn't say that's acceptable, even for a company car, it should have been serviced regularly to make sure it would last long enought to be able to sell it for a semi-reasonable price, but even if neglected, I still think it shouldn't be THAT bad yet... Oh yeah, I just remembered, in that over 100,000kms I did in the Escort, I did have to replace the starter motor and the alternator. Big deal.

Word of warning about ex rentals. I once worked at a service station that hired utes. We had one hired for a 4 hour hire, $32.00 plus $50 deposit that was returned. Ever since that particular hire the ute started going through oil like it was going out of fashion. The guy that hired it used the 4 hours for an engine change for his ute, putting the stuffed one back into the hire ute. We of course could never prove it was him but the engine numbers had definitly changed in the few weeks it took us to realise. Wonder how many people or for that matter mechanics that source replacement gearboxes/engines that way and charge the customer for a reco. Cheap source of parts.

Cant believe after seeing all those faults you are still looking at it. WALK AWAY. Any chance it used to be a Taxi? LPG suggests so,no screws in dash would be suspicious to me.
