BAM B40 Air rifle

Hi - Saw this at a gun shop the other day and had to have it - felt good, and looked good. It is a chinese copy of the Air Arms TX200 (I think it retails for well over $1000 in Aus) The BAM as a copy retails for about $600, its a neat enough thing, shoots well, and has "magnum" air rifle power. Got this one with scope and laser dot for $300 - had bugger all use.

Yeah it looks good, I have a Gamo 640 that I bought new about 2 years ago - its kind of teh Toyota Camry of air rifles - reliable but slow and with several plastic wearing components it has a certain shelf life. (still has heaps of life yet)

This is a bit ****y with the laser dot, but for rats in the shed, you couldnt ask for a better set up!

Certainly an impressive looking sight arrangement ! The chinese are pumping out some reasonably priced reasonable quality these days. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a norinco these days.

Yeah I remember when the JW15 was $179 brand new with a free scope.

The imperfections in the barrel and stock were free.......

Then they started making that bolt action 7.62x39 rifle for about $430 new - and of course once you had the rifle, SKK and SKS ammo was cheap as......

Yeah in NSW its category A and you need to apply for a permit to acquire.

I'm pretty sure that firearms licenses were standardised with a national categorisation some years ago, so a cat A firearm in NSW will be the same as cat A in WA, etc.

Very nice! Wish I had my old air rifle, had an old BSA Meteor that used be awesome for just mucking round. Can't argue with $15 bucks for 500 rounds =P

QLD you need a license, as we found out one day trying to buy ammo, we decided it was time to turn her in instead :(

My first ever new rifle was a BSA Meteor when I was about 12. used to go through 500 rounds in a day in the backyard at Mermaid Waters QLD just shooting cans and plastic bottles - was a great little thing.

Yeah there will be a little "Plinking" (shooting cans etc.... but I also have a self resetting pellet trap where when you shoot the middle target the others all reset.

There are rats in the shed, some naughty species of birds that steal my baby chickens even whole eggs, and try to knock over lambs to dine on their eyes (and once they cant see they dine on the rest of them) There are rabbits that get into the veggie patch.

But at a guess most of its use will be just for fun.

I have a decent collection of firearms but realistically there is a limited number I can use on my little block and remain a good neighbour. No one around here minds the odd centrefire rifle shot or shotgun shot (to kill a beast or similar) but quiet is good!

Ahh, the old air rifle. I commenced sport shooting with a little .177 cal air rifle many, many years ago now. Can't remember the brand off hand, but it had micro-adjustable sights for windage & elevation, and had a proper stock that allowed a good fit for the user. It was awesomely accurate and I used to shoot mice with it in a large shed up in the Wimmera area of Vic.

Air rifles probably get overlooked these days, but IMO there are few better ways to develop fine marksmanship abilities than with a well made, quality air rifle. When you can stick a postage stamp on a box and consistently hit it at 10 metres freehand with open sights, then you're well on your way to appreciating a steady aim.

There were once many but in 1996 an obnoxious little man who personally hated guns in the hands of anyone he did not control achieved his life dream and got into a position where he shut it all down and every one of them went broke or was bought out for a pittance. (Think of the car industry if Harold Scruby was PM)

The only gun maker left in Australia is in Lithgow and they will not sell you anything anymore.

I have owned many air rifles, the best one was a Dianna M52 in .22 which had the range of an average 22LR with extreme accuracy.
