Default We thought we'd tell you how good our new AFM V8 technology is...

but 'Wheels' beat us to it.

Thats the brochure folder I just received in the mail from Holden, touting the "four-cylinder V8"

All I have to do is take a drive and I get 12 months subscription to Wheels. That would be a first for me because I've never bought, let alone subscribed a car mag in my life.

Good marketing though.

So what you are saying is that to ensure that a copy of WHEELS magazine is not delivered to your house every month all you have to do is not drive a new Holden?

Yeh I can do that......

Sounds like a bloody good deal to me!

It's actually not a bad idea for all the Holden bogans, i'd say Wheels will give out a lot of free subscriptions. Definitely good marketing.

Normally tyrekickers turn up to dealerships of their own accord, so they can get a free thrash.

AFM is obviously so bad they have to give out bribes to entice test pilots.

Not sure how test driving one is going to convince anyone of its fuel saving prowess but if it gets more tyre-kickers through the door tying up demo's then its a good thing!!!

Seriously though any product awareness is good marketing.

The only way I see AFM actually doing something would be to make the 4 cylinders closest to the cab, the only 4 working on 4 cylinder mode, with a detachable crankshaft from the 4 closest to the front of the car, then it could run like a true 4 cylinder. But it's more like just unplugging 4 spark plugs.

The idea isn't so much increasing efficiency by reducing the number of cylinders, but reducing the capacity/displacement of the engine. It stops half the valves from opening. If the engine has to keep performing an inlet stroke for each cylinder with a near closed throttle plate, the whole engine has to work harder to turn over and create a bigger vaccuum in the manifold. The bigger the capacity, the greater the vaccuum generated, and the more resistance the engine has to work against.

Imagine if you left an LS7 and an LS1 idling on engine stands at the same RPM, with the same throttle plate angle. All things being equal, the 7 should have used more fuel to keep turning over. It's the same idea here, reducing the effective capacity by engineering out the inlet stroke for four of the cylinders. (Barring the other differences between the two, like camshaft duration)

It'll make most of its difference (not much, anyway) at idle and partial throttle. Anytime the car's actually moving and accelarating, you'd probably save more fuel by engineering a weight reduction.

Anyone seen a new LPG commodore. At least 3 LPG badges on the outside.

There's one thing (and only one) that Holden does well - marketing.
