I find going for a $100 special is the best.
They play everything and have surround sound.
My family by Brand name and close to $400 and they don't have surraound or the ability to play everything.

Mine is lasting as long as theirs too.

I always buy the cheapest I can find that will do want I want. That way when it dies in two years I did not get it fixed just buy another. No use paying heaps for a so called good brand or model.

mate it depends on how fussy you are about picture quality and all that?? if you are a semi-audio/videophile then you wont want one of the cheaper ones...

the pioneer one looks perfect - esp with DVD-A, SACD, DivX plus Progressive Scan !!!!!!! and $229 is f'n peanuts !!!!

[EDIT] even the DV-383 model under it is a bargain !!! I cant believe it is only $170 and has progressive scan as well !!

I believe the more expensive ones wont let you play the stuff that you want to, because they dont encourage that sort of behaviour (burning/copy)
I was told the Quality of you DVD should match the quality of your TV so that pioneer looks good.

I have the 676A model - looks like the 686A is this year's evolution. The 676A was highly recommended by numerous reviewers.

Pioneer ones are good, and im pretty sure ive seen one in Black?

Failing that, LG make good ones. Not neccesarily having the features of a more expensive brand but they are still very good for what you pay.

This is the one I was going to recommend.
As a budget player, it's difficult to beat, I own the 676A and it eats my few year old $1000 Toshy.

Are LG electronics any good? I've been told to stay away from them because thier product quality is the same as back when they were Goldstar?
