Yeah, already read about it on a few sites. Be interesting to see what happens with it...

Yep, apparently OS X has been designed to run on Power PC and Intel right from the start...

Jobs says that by 2007 all new Apple computers will have Intel CPUs

Which is no great suprise when you realise exactly what technology OS X is built on...

NextStep. Steve Jobs at his greatest.

Okay folks, I am not really rapped that FordForums are looking at trying an Illegal act like running Tiger on your Garden Variety Dell Computers. If you want a Macintosh, buy one. Apple make some great computers, and your discussing of this sickens me. Visit AppleTalk if you wish to find out why it is immoral. Oh, and don't expect Leopard to work on your computers. Apple are working one something to block this.

Good old NextStep - I think OSX is actually based on BSD Unix with a bunch of the NextStep technology used in the windowing system.

See, the thing is that if the above average Wintel user can install OSX and get it to run (and by all reports it runs GREAT with the appropriate video hardware) then they may be tempted to actually switch camps when they realise that OSX is actually far superior to anything Microsoft has to offer.

If they had to go and buy a new Apple to try it out, 99 times out of 100 they won't bother and continue to struggle along with the other Microsoft victims...

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple's way of knocking this on the head is to release a limited support x386 version of OSX.

Just to be clear, I do not condone software piracy but this IS happening and if as a result, more users take up the Mac platform, so much the better...

FreeBsD is the underpinnings of NextStep, which OsX is based on. The Windowing system is actually called Aqua, which is PDF Based, like Quartz. I am glad to hear however that you don't condone Piracy, which this BLATANTLY IS. If people want the experience of Mac OsX they need to buy a Macintosh. One more thing, if the larger install base means we have more pirates, we may get more Viruses. The count today is ZERO, and I am not looking forward to getting more than that. However I am still using the PPC version of Tiger. They may not affect me.

Two sites,

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=132150
and
http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index...howtopic=10800

Appletalk is where I usually post (Same user name), however Macrumors is a MUCH larger user-base.

Who said any of us were looking at trying an Illegal act by running OS X on our PCs? We are simply reporting and commenting on the fact that other people are doing it. I don't believe FordForums.com.au could be held responsible, and also I have not seen any links posted in this thread to enable anyone to download the illegal software, so while it may be, at best, ethically dodgy, we are not discussing actually doing it, merely discussing that it is being done by some people.

I don't seen anyone condoning software piracy in this thread.

Would it sicken you the same way if people were discussing getting Windows XP to work natively on Apple hardware designed to run OS X? Possibly, but I'd bet it would be for different reasons.

I merely find it an interesting news item, and am interested to see what happens as a result of it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, hence this thread.

I'd be surprised if the virus count would go up - the reason there are so many Windoze viruses is that in general, all the Windows versions are a bonanza of crap coding just crying out to be hacked while OSX is, as you correctly state, based on FreeBSD - arguably the most secure operating system on the face of the planet.

I'm on PPC Tiger too - using a 533MHz G4 - I love the way the old hardware (5 years in this case) still runs OSX brilliantly and as I have upgraded to the next versions, it seems to be going FASTER, rather than grinding to a halt forcing me to buy new hardware...

And that I have no problem with. I have seen one thread too many on this recently, and I know how EVERY one of them have turned out. They have all started to discuss how you can obtain it, and get it to run on their computers. Ultimately, this thread won't go the same way, however if it does, I will be dissapointed.

Apple are not condoning this when the Mactels come out next year. They have already said that they will not stop people from doing this, however they won't bee supporting it. I guess I had better come to terms with the fact that it IS happening, and I am powerless to stop it.

My PowerBook is 1.67, however my PowerMac is 667 (rare Digital Audio), and after turning off DashBoard the computers are better than with Panther. However stability is not there yet. I will have to wait before we get 10.3.9 stability.

Pirating OSX to run on wintel is like stealing a VK Commodore. Theres no point to it, and once you have it you wish you hadnt bothered in the first place.

Theres nothing wrong with OSX on wintels, custom built wintels can be better than Macs if you know what parts to get.

Easier quicker less hassle just to run freebsd off the back of a magazine CD, then to waste a portion of your life in an OSX conversion. I cannot think of any reason to run a "based on open source mac OS" + hack + troubleshooting over a made for wintel pure open source OS. Theres more then enough emulators out there that run on *nix after all.

100% waste of ones time.

Cannot see the point if I want an OS with limited application support I'll freely load any one of a Myriad of GPL desktop Linux's.

GUI's bah, give me a stable command line OS any day over all this bug ridden eye candy.

Please explain what you mean by limited application support

With OSX you get a stable command line OS AND a NON-bug-ridden windowing system.
Did I mention no viruses, trojans & worms?
