Default New highway opens with..a bike race?!

Most people in WA would have heard this, the extension of Kwinana Freeway and the new Forest Highway will be opened tomorrow with, yes a bike race, not motorbikes, push bikes.

Is it just me or is that one of the most ridiculous things to do for a Highway opening??

Why not get some local car clubs involved instead?

Anyway, It's good to see it finally opened and I can't wait to drive it.

Well yeah , Not really my cup of tea
But i guess it coincides with the green image the goverment is pushing .
I personally like like to see it opened with historic cars like model t's or cars to that effect .

Can't say I am in a mad rush to go to Perth, but this is huge for the SW of the state.
Big thanks to all who pushed to make this happen.

since when have car clubs ever been invited to do anything? why on earth would any government want to be seen cooperating with a bunch of environmental vandals and hoons? quite simply, the image of car clubs as portrayed by the media is such that we are the LAST people on the planet a government would like to cooperate with.

I hate to be the kill joy but EVERY Vic freeway is opened with bikes.

They have an open day and have bikes going one end and running going another way and BBQ etc.

They do it because they can and also people get to see alot of the freeway so they know where to go when they drive on it the next day.

I raced B-grade in the road race and criterium held for the opening of the freeway through Albury. As Buzz Box said, the north bound lane had bicycle races (A through D grade) and the south bound lane had a running race. After these events the freeway was flooded with pedestrians for the official opening by the PM.

I gotta laugh though how the government is all for cracking down on hoons, street racing, murdercycle riders and the like, yet on the news they show some dude standing in the middle of the new highway waving a chequered flag to kick off the opening for cars, like he's starting some sort of race. Talk about a bunch of hypocrites.
