Default Advice Please, Wanting to upgrade my cam in my AU

Hey everyone,

I'v been thinking about upgrading my cam for a while, now I'v been told by a cam dealer that i need a aftermarket ecu if i alter my cam in my au.

I don't want anything to lumpy, just something more than stock, maybe stage 1 or 1.5, nothing ridiculous.

Would you recommend doing this or just throwing the cam straight in?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks ,

Your in Vic, speak to GnD or Bluepower.. Could speak to JMM but you'd be wasting your time and money. I'd highly recommend a Surecam.
Baring in mind, after a cam change, something small you wont need to have a tune but it's advisable to get the most out of it. Add a vernier gear to.

Ive always wondered why people talk in stages? As in, you here all the commodore owners go on about stage 3 heads, stage 4 cam. I have no idea what they are on about.
Talk to surecam, tell them what you have and what you want, and they will please you better than the new Rammstein filmclip.
So what stage cam do I have, lol. And what stage was Stiddy's? A stage 12?

yeh i have NFI what stage things are.. i always assumed it was a manufacturers way of how extreme it is lol :P
and yes... i am in vic and i got a surecam and i am very pleased with it, just tell him what you want and he will grind you a cam to perfectly suit your needs

i personaly think, putting a "bit bigger cam then standard" in is pointless, spend your money on other things. If u want power u are better off going all out, but as most people have said, speak to Surecam $565 i think it is to your door.

Best bang for buck mod is diff gears, hands down.

the stage thing was a description of where the power starts and stops,
stage 1 power from 1800 to 4800 ideal for towing ...normal idle
stage 2 power from 2500 to 6000 slight lope more power in higher rev range still suitable for street
stage 3 lumpy idle valve train work needed 3500 to 7000 suitable for track
it went something like that from memory, the figures i just made up but you get the idea.

Stages should have gone out with Noah and the Ark. Talk with a cam grinder, Watso, Camtech or Dean Tighe, they have the masters and will grind one to suit. Cam also depends on type hydraulic or solid or roller cam. What you think is a big cam and what realy is a big cam is a big difference. My clevo cam by Dean Tighe was a 248/258 duration and 596/606 lift @50 on 108 lobe centres. This is a biggish cam for a clevo. A big cam would be 280 odd duration flat and 660 lift and higher. My 557 BBF will be a solid roller and over 700 thou lift. Trick Manswetto have a 950 lift roller in the capri. Thats effin huge. Let us know. What about a xr6 grind?

A big cam for an AUi6 isnt 660thou of lift. The difference between a big cam in a clevo and an i6 is quite big. Hell, look at big cams for a Skyline i6 and the profiles for it will be completely different to what is a big cam for us, you have to compare apples with apples.

daniel i got 200rwkw out of my au3 xr8 motor unopen. i put a good set of headers on , 2.5 in twin pipe std cats ,aftermarket ecu is a must , try and get more air in the air box , use k&N air filter ,you said you want to up grade your cam a little ,go and get a au3 xr8 220 from ford, i got 200rwkw with a good tune. what head are on your au2 motor ?

At the end of the day it comes down to what you want, everyone is raising valid points though. Well almost.
Monty is right in saying diff gears are one of the best mods. Surecam's imo best on the market. (Monty, stid had the biggest possible cam Surecam could give him, no sure on specs, but it would barely idle and didn't have much til 3500-4000 then it was white knuckled ride)
Cam/head/valve train is where you will gain alot of power from the I6 if its done right. Especially if you have a tuner who knows what he's doing.
Hoppers Heads in Vic have a 175rwkw head and cam package at the moment for a silly price, not much over $1000 from memory.
If you want a quick car, everything has to be 'matched or balanced' Ie no point getting a cam with a power band from 1800-3500rpm if you have a 3000rpm stall.
There is a vast range of products for these tractor motors these days, choose wisely.

a custom tune and tuning tool is a must imho if a cam other stock is fitted. otherwise i dont reckon you'd get the full benefit of the cam. i was told a cam with a tuning tool goes hand in hand when it comes to au's

yes, hoppers cylinder heads are about 10 minutes away from me and it is quite cheap
you still need to factor in tuning, a tuning device, got to give them your head and how do you know those figures are reliable? for an I6 to make that much power im fairly sure the cam would be quite aggressive so youd need a high stall and trans cooler to suit
also they specify i believe EA-EL.. im sure if it was compatible with the AU they would say so but who knows? i havent called them so i dont know but it does look quite appealing
but honestly, if it was that easy to make 175rwkw, everyone would have done it by now
