Yesterford in Melbourne have brand new electronic distributors for 2L Pinto, unfortunately they're selling them for $600, comes with a beefier coil though.
I'm in the middle of converting my old distributor using a Crane Cams Fireball XR700/ XR3000 conversion kit- haven't tried firing it up yet, so can't give you any feedback. You can try getting one of these kits online, I got mine from the Ford Escort shop in Boondall, Brisbane. It only takes a few hours to install. |

What are the benefits of electronic ignition over points in a street car. I know points can bounce at high rpm but I rarely push my engine to redline. I have my dwell angle spot on so gap is never an issue. Input appreciated.

About 12 years ago I had a 1.6lt panelvan with a motorcraft distributor. It was a piece of crap. When I had the engine rebuilt I had the distributor replaced with an original Bosch one. It was much better but still had the typical problems with having points. I had them replaced with an electronic conversion kit from Bosch and from then on I did not have to touch the distributor. The engine ran smoother whether it was hot or cold, it never missed a beat, and I think I may have gotten some more power out of it. I had it fitted by a mechanic who also changed the dissy over to a full mechanical advance and the whole lot at the time cost me about$380.00. definately worth the money which ever way you go.
