Default zetec or ca18det

In a month i'll be doing a conversion on my mk1 cortina but im un decided on which motor to go with.
The previous owner turned the car into a boy racer type car which i really wanted as a 20yr old,ten years later im not really sure about it anymore.

I like the idea of keeping it all ford but the price of tuning it to the same power as the nissan will i think hurt my hip pocket.Also from my small amount of research i think the nissan is an easier swap.

Anyways your thoughts/ideas will help with my decision

aldo,
i think the problem with doing a zetec swap is the sump
interferring with the steering
there is a thread HERE

on what someone else has done

taking that into consideration the CA swap is easier yes.

I agree the ca18det will give enormous power and probably easier conversion with many available resources. The only problem I would have if i were doing the conversion is the fact that it is a cortina. With the zetec you tend to inherit some tradition (being a ford engine and all). Cortinas have a traditional ford feeling and I don't think they suit the boy racer appeal.

You put in a ca18det into a cortina and in a traditional ford way it ruins it. Ignoring the fact it would probably be cheaper, easier to convert and heaps of go. I say go buy a datsun 1600 and put a ca18det in it if you want to go fast. Still be quick and its a datsun not a cortina

Never the less, I love the paint job, look great.

what about the 1500 and 1600s cortina/ escorts engines that have been modified and

have been fitted with datsun/nissan cranks/rods etc for increased capacity and higher performance

is that different ?

or should i have not mentioned that LOL

do what you want its your car

Im preety much set on the ca18det.Im thinking in stock form it'll eat pintos .I also think the install wont be to hard,in saying that I've never done an engine swap that required custom mounts.

As for the sr20 ,they are a big motor and the conversions i have seen the engine bay is chock full of motor and little room to move.

Im will do the conversion and leave it stock for some time for reliability,im sure it'll have enough power to do a few power slides : .

Does anybody do a conversion kit? As in a changeover crossmember or something.

Horses for courses. If you want a performance horse go the jap ricer. But if you want a nice modern reliable engine in a classic car, and maintain some Ford cred, go the zetec.

These are classic cars that need to remain old school. Keep it real and old. These forty plus year old cars are not drift boy racers out of Fast and Furious. Spend more money keeping it original than updating to plastic fantastic. Im doing up a Mk1 Escort and believe me its all very easy to slip down to Auto Barn and get Ya bits but ya dont

I would stick with the original 1600 and restore restore restore

so putting EFI and an aftermarket ECU or fitting a zetec in a classic old skool car is keeping it original real and old ?? ?

CORTINA - Mk1 - My point was classic cars are getting harder and harder to find with out some 16 year old who has had his time chopping out fire walls and fitting SAAS seats into are getting few and far between. Why mix and match cars and engines from different countries.
I just dont get it


Would you buy a Harley and fit a Hyabusa motor in it?

i havent seen anyone mention a 16 year old or chopping out firewalls ?

everyone is entitled to do what they want to something they own

like it or not

they own it they can do what they please

there will always be someone who wont like the wheels or the colour its painted etc etc

it will never change no matter what other peoples opinions are

and no i wouldnt buy a harley

what about a mazda bp 1800 out of an mx5.. if you get the 2nd gen then its a 2ltr(or turbo 175hp) with a 6 speed gearbox.. 3rd gen bp-z3 200 odd hp.. mazda is also owned by ford so your not breaking tradition too much... plus theyre nice looking engines

theres a bloke down the road whos got an 18RG (twin cam 2 litre)TOYOTA(complete with twin 45mm webers) motor in a mk 1 corty,(FAST,LIKE LIGHTNING),no ecu,injection,and all that rubbish,but boy is that engine bay full, (just another thought

I've got no intention of carving up my corty ,this build if you can call it that is 10 years in the making .Im youngish(30),I want good cheap power and a 1500 or pinto wont cut it. I would love to go cossy but the jap twin cams cannot be beat for price/power/availability......in my opinion of coarse.

Im unsure of what to buy, a motor and box or just get a whole front cut?

Im in the process of buying an xp ute.That'll be my classic unmolested street car ,chrome hub caps,white walls, cant wait.

id look for just the engine and trans

with a front cut you get a lot o stuf you dont need

i spose epnds on whether you are going to use factory ECU and loom...

Check out silvia/drifting forums for cheap CA18's.

ae86drivingclub is great for parts too - i tihnk i saw a CA18DE with the wiring for $500 - the 5spd can be had for about $400 aswell. Great cheap power..

4AGE's are a bit more expensive but they are great motors and sound incredible when they've been hotted up a bit. The 2L Ford twin cam 4-bangers are very similar


Another engine swap i've seen is a VG30DE into the Cortina! It was for sale as well but it's not on http://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/ anymore. I saved the picture luckily. I honestly think this is an awesome conversion.

go for a drive in one ,(theyll put brown stains on ya jocks FOR SURE)
you dont want to butcher it up ??????,(putting anything but FORD in
,is butchering it up !,JUST REMEMBER!,your diff wont last very long with a WIZ BANG HIGH TECH 4 BANGER !!!!!,(how fast do you want to go )and cost ?????,as mentioned above MOTOR AND CONVERSION ,will cost alot more than cars worth!!!!(cosult an engineer FIRST,before handing over cash for any motor,(conversion will have to meet ADR s for that engine year,(engineer will tell you )(youll have to run new fuel lines ,maybe new fuel tank(pressure return lines ect ect),not just drop in and go
2 LITRE ,WARMED OVER WOULD BE PLENTY OF POWER IN A MK1 CORTY

I already have a warmed over 2litre on 45's backed up by celica 5 speed running 4.11 gears in the back.........Its not enough.

I want it to be as fast if not faster than my fpv which from what i've read can be done with a stock ca18det and also without cutting my car up.




bejezzus thats a lot of motor in there!Servicing that thing would be a muther!
