I don't beleive its a joint venture ...... Mazda and Ford are in partnership with the Ranger. I think the article is saying that Ford has joined Toyota in taking the reins (individually) to R&D utes for the rest of the world for their respective brands.

Technically speaking, Ford and Toyota are developing pick-ups, not car-based utes that Ford Aus did invent..

I thought when Ford upgraded You Yangs the idea was to sub out some of it for engineering by third parties. Maybe thats what they mean?

I can see how one would get that Ford and Toyota were teaming up on a joint project, the way that article reads.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Ford has been the number one truck in the US for at least the past 33 years, straight. Toyota is having problems with it's first full sized truck, the Tundra. It still does not match up to the F-series. Ford has surpassed Toyota in initial quality, and Toyota also has recalls and much other negative press going on as they learn what it means to be such a huge company. Ford is not about to go into a project with them, they just leap-frogged them. If Toyota says they are going to step-up their game in utes in Oz you better believe Ford is not going to take that lying down. This competition will only be a good thing for Australia, and potentially some other markets. Steve

Just to be a little more accurate, when this year's numbers are announced it will be 33 years. As of 2008 it has been 32 years running.
If nothing else, Ford will brag about their truck dominance. They are taking it to a new level too because they know the competition wants to challege them now. ...always someone gotta try to take you down. Steve

Well I believe Ford invented the pickup truck and the Aussie ute. Today, Ford still makes the best of both.

Also, why is it always 'the Aussies invented the ute' Never 'Ford Australia invented the ute.' Sorry to be nitpicking but thats always annoyed me.
