Default Ford Territory rings a bell to get 5 stars

THE Ford Territory will be accorded a maximum five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) crash test score across the range when production resumes on January 11 after the annual summer break at the Broadmeadows plant in Victoria.

The revised rating brings the Territory into line with Ford’s other Australian-made car, the FG Falcon.

The Territory, which currently scores a four-star ANCAP result, will gain the full five stars across the board with the addition of an audible front passenger seat belt warning to remind the front occupant to put on their seatbelt.

The Territory has had the basis for a five-star result in its body structure since its launch in 2004 but lacked the required audible seat belt warning and necessary equipment as standard across the range.

The AWD Territory with side curtain airbags was first crash-tested by ANCAP in January 2006.

Stability control was standard on AWD models since release of the SX model in 2004, and from the January 2008 SY model it became standard on the RWD versions.

Left: Ford Australia president and CEO Marin Burela.

All Territorys since the SYII update in July this year come standard with side curtain airbags, as well as the previously standard ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, dual front dual-stage airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, side thorax airbags, driver’s seatbelt audible warning and stability control.

When tested in January 2006, the dual front airbags and ABS/EBD brakes were standard on all variants. Side curtain airbags were standard equipment on the TS and Ghia variants and optional on the entry-level TX.

Electronic stability control was standard on all-wheel-drive variants and the Ghia RWD. It was an option for the other models.

Ford’s FG Falcon petrol sedan was accorded five-star status in August 2008 and LPG sedan models were included from April this year.
Australia's first 5 star safety sedan. Australia's first 5 star safety SUV.

I'm just amazed they didn't do it 5 years ago. The DSC requirement would have at least meant the AWD model would've got the 5 stars. Anyway, in a months time every Territory will be 5 stars.

Good stuff. But would be happy with 4 star service and reliability first!

So for an extra annoying 'bing bing bing' you get an extra star…makes no sense to me…I hope in the new model you are able to turn it off as you can in the older models

All the good things happening in the states in terms of reliability are starting to filter down to us by some of the stories of the fg. Service well 1 step at a time. I think the extra 'bing bing bing' is a feature to ensure that passengers are wearing seat belt. whether or not that warrants a vehicle getting 5 stars or not is debatable. A sure fire way to stop that noise is to ensure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt. I know in vic it has become the drivers obligation to ensure all passengers are belted.

Does this mean BF could have been 5 star with the addition of this buzzer?

No, the BF's chassis didn't have the inbuilt strength and safety features of the FG

Fair enough to get up to 4 stars you need to pass certain crash tests, etc...

But to get an extra star just for something that enforces a law thats already in place.

Thats like saying you can only get a 6 star rating if:

There is a device that makes sure you have your licence on you

There is a device that beeps when you dont indicate

There is a device that tells you when your brake lights are out

There is a device that tells you when your fog lights are on and its not foggy

There is a device that beeps when you do 20 under the speed limit

Your car beeps when you lower it more then 50mm....

Stupid....

I am aware of this, but Territory came out based on BA/BF platform. It has not been updated to FG as of yet.

BF is based on an old AU platform though, and was never designed for curtain airbags.

Altough the Territorys chassis may have roots with the BA its probably so different as to not even be that similar at all. Doubt wether anything in terms of structural points would even be the same.

The Territory "Shell" Is Different to the BF (That means the cabin) The Front Skirts and top rails are similer to the BF but alot changed, the Territory is alot more stronger then a BF Falcon.

The FG is different again.
