Having just read those articles and seen this mornings news footage it just defies belief. A war zone is the best way to describe it. The video of people fighting in and around the Superdome, holding up supply trucks at gunpoint, setting things on fire, dying in the streets is just shocking to see. "The truth is, a terrible tragedy like this brings out the best in most people, brings out the worst in some people," said Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour on NBC's Today show. For those shooting at supply helicopters, therefore getting those as well as the air ambulances grounded-Have a think about what you've done. Absolute chaos. Many more will die yet I think.

its damn shocking, there seems to be no support from the US government (not enough anyway) and people are just running wild trying to survive.
there was ample time for the government to prepare for the worst, but there is no structure to the relief effort

Seems like it's getting worse, too. On todays news people are getting more and more frustrated and desperate that they cant get food water and shelter, and there are people stealing eveything in sight and rapes galore

I heard on one news report that young infants are getting raped, and also another story where a woman went to check on her shop only to get raped by a full group of men. Pretty bad situation

Stealing I can understand, but how does anyone come to the thought pattern, Tornado, flood, home destroyed, no food or drinking water, I know I'll rape someone! Some never rose far above the primates they evolved from.

How can you sympathise with a nationality that demands the right to bear arms then shoot at each other when something like this happens? When was the last time you saw a quote like this in regards to a natural disaster?

I'm sorry but I have a damn hard time having any sympathy for the majority of Americans.

that's one of the most ignorant things I have seen in a while. I have no great love for the americans but what a load of twaddle !
What has the 2nd amendment got to do with cyclone Katrina?? The people shooting at poilce and doing the rapes are CRIMINALS not the people wanting to legitimately have firearms.
Geez, I am still in awe that you posted that.

Exactly right, Cabinet Molestor. It's the criminal element that are doing these things, not normal citizens turned psycho. Sadly, it seems that these types of people feed off others suffering, and actually thrive in the middle of a natural disaster of epic proportion. The news tonight was mentioning the rape and murder of a 7 year old girl in that stadium, that is just sickening. These ******* crims are fulfilling their own f@rked up desires and agendas while there is panic and no law enforcement, and the real tragedy of the situation is that it should have been THEM that died.

Mike, the 2nd amendment has nothing to do with ****ers who steal guns only to shoot at rescue choppers. I know plenty of seppo 'gun nuts' and they are as normal as you and I. I know you get off on bagging America, but jesus, people are dying in the streets, can't you give it a rest for once?

If it weren't for the 2nd amendment there wouldn't be such easy access to the weapons that these idiots use to shoot each other. But that's a whole other topic...

If there was oil there Bush would have been there already!! He doesnt seem to be getting substantial help or control of that place. What sort of leader does not impose full martial law in these times and get an aid plan rolling .People are dying!!

1/ Get control of the city .
2/ Get water, food, medicine and temporary accomodation happenning.

It makes me wonder what type of government that is?? Are they related to swamy buggertherestofyouimalright jack gee?

Actually, the area is a vital link in US petroleum distribution to refineries and the damage to date is causing huge supply and demand problems throughout the Southern states.

As in Australia, primary responsibility in civil matters falls to the States initally. What this is showing is a clear failure and over reliance in communications technology, mobile phones and trunked police radio networks, as are those of other civil services AND business, all of which are utterly out of order in the region. Folk are better off using CB radios, seriously.

Insofar law and order, if criminal gangs seek control and rampage - then it falls to the National Guard, police (those that have not fled or resigned) and US Army to take the criminals down, quite readily by lethal force if required.

Under similar disaster circumstances I'd expect the same here or in any other western country.

Useless, if your going to blame a government, blame the state government. The US feds, from what I've seen, are taking extrodinary measures to assist however it simply takes time. The state government has failed these people dismally (as I expect our own state governments sould here too)....blame them.

There's not a lot they can do. You can't drive in with anything short of a light armour vehicle (those ones you're seeing on the news) and helicopters are getting shot at (try returning fire from a helicopter in an urban environment, let alone a flooded one). Half the National Guard is in Iraq or Afganistan (which is stupid). The sooner they have troops on the ground, killing these bloody idiots who are causing all the problems, the better.

I'd say what I really think but I'd probably get banned. I'll just say the only way it could possibly be worse was if a Hurricane hit south central LA. Draw what you want from that.

Not suprising this is happening as New Orleans has one of the highest murder and crime rates in the US. Army Reserves have been bought in, some who have only just got back from Iraq. The Governor of the state has issued a warning to the looters that they are trained to kill, in some cases have killed and will shoot to kill if the need arises. Its also no suprise that police are looting too, they have no other way of getting food and water. Some police officers have smashed their way into shops and told people to take food, water, medical supplies etc and do not touch anything else.

Its beyond my comprehension.

I just found this: http://www.abilityschoolofutah.org/e...ans_damage.swf (warning, VERY big, probably only worth clicking on if you've got at least 512K ADSL or better).

I can't imagine what it must actually be like over there right now. I would say night time would be the worst - Im guessing that light at night would be severely limited compared to what it was like only weeks ago...

These pictures are also incredible I think:
http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthrea...0/page/0#95968

And for those who don't have Google Earth, you can also have a look by going to http://maps.google.com then searching for "New Orleans" then clicking the red Katrina button.

It seems more like a movie then something that is actually real, it's so hard to comprehend...

Did you see some poor bloke(needs dry clothes) taking a few clothes to wear from a flooded shop, 2 cops rush him, point a shotgun at his head, and the other knocks the clothes into the water! I mean what! Gosh, you call that looting and lawlessness!

i think its just sensationalist journalism mainly all this shooting stuff. and anyway, why not shoot at stupid cops that are trying to kill you(by starving you) by not letting you or your family drink some "stolen" water from a shop! (i'm joking, but sadly could be the case)

And how many shots have been fired at choppers? 1?!
