As the title suggests I am currently in the market for another car. I have all but sold my patrol so im weighing up my options on what to get next. I have always like the X-type and have noticed that you can pick 1 up for a very reasonable price now.
More specifically i'm after the AWD 3.0l and must be manual. From what I have seen my budget allows me a 2001 - 2003 model. Has anyone owned/driven or had any experience with this model jag? Is there any major problems associated with the X-type? Should the 2.5l also be considered? (have not driven a 2.5) Just after some other peoples opinions on said car. Cheers. |

AFAIK they are a Mondeo underneath (which may or may not be a bad thing)

X Type of that year is based on the 2000 Mondeo platform. They were built in England so I would expect electrics to be dodgy :P
Engines are 2.5L 194 hp (145 kW; 197 PS) and 180 lb·ft (240 N·m) 3L 231 hp (172 kW; 234 PS) and 209 lb·ft (283 N·m) Weight is 1525kg ish |

Early ones were all AWD, but later ones also came in FWD with a little 2.1L V6 or a 2.2L Diesel.

My dad bought a 2.1 litre auto a few years back so he could stop driving his V12 XJS everywhere... He hates it - feels more like a swish Mondeo than an actual Jag. He's talking about replacing it with an XR5 Turbo Mondeo, which I reckon will be much better. Don't know about the 3.0 awd ones, but the 2.1 auto is pathetic.

I wouldn't buy one, build quality just doesn't seem good enough to deserve putting Jaguar badging on it.

I was also considering one of these for a long time. One thing I'd pay attention to is the centre diff. It's one of these "sealed for life" BS units and as an engineer I looked into them- CHANGE THE OIL IN IT. It only has 0.6L or so and it cannot be serviced if it fails- it's like $2500 plus labour to replace the whole unit- I believe Jag UK charge £2300 including labour...
Other than that...I rekon they're pretty good. Possibly a bit cramped in the back and "olde worlde" styling (grandpa car as my mates call it) but who gives a rats- the 3.0 Manual is awesome, wet or dry. |

i think it was the larger model that a bloke brought into my workshop about 5 years ago , pretty sure it was an `01 model though.
he was after a remote transmitter for the central locking. had been quoted $1700 for a single factory replacement one. i had an after market kit i was selling for $179 fitted with 2 remotes so he decided that we would fit that in to the jag..............what a nightmare. i have never seen so much wiring in a car . i thought the americans had strange wiring systems but this was something on a whole different scale. there must be about 50 relays behind the glove box, same in each side of the boot, bundles of cables like you would not believe. i ended up getting his locks working but could not find the wires that powered the indicators.

I think his issue is that he expected a solid feeling, reasonably powered, British Jag and ended up with a mondeo with leather seats that takes 40 seconds to get to 100kph. That also cost him a fortune. Current XR5 poos on his '03 S-type in terms of appointment and styling too.

Well for all the negatives there's positives eh ?!
My brother bought the S type from the first owner obviously lost a bomb about 5yrs ago,low k's it was mint what a great buy ! We are both in auto parts game so know the old history of Jags but mondeo platform of not its a pearla ! Comfortable saloon and not your average norm's family car he having 3kids. Large boot and enough poke to satisfy the requirements, hardly an issue with it to date so all good. Its still a "jag" to any other person looking at it and I sure would have one instead of a Mondeo but thats my opinion. To the thread starter don't get the Xtype, as others have said too gutless get the Stype,great bargains to be had.

The 3.0 manual is far from gutless- it's quicker than a stock XT or XR6 B series and still quicker than current Commodore Omega- 0-100 in 7 seconds flat. They sound awesome with a good exhaust.

What about a MG ZT190 , manual,good looking , and the best front wheel driver I have driven. Not exceptionally quick,but good enough and point it at a bend or two it would leave many cars in its wake.

my dad bought an 01 xtype his is an awd auto with the 2.5 in it and 174km's on it and trust me it moves, i've driven it and it drives really well and doesn't feel like you're driving a tank or a smaller car, the rear leg room in it is a bit cramped but compared to his 89 jaguar sovereign he had there's actually more room im 6'2.
