Just curious, What actually determines when a car is a demonstrator?
And how many KM's is acceptable on receiving a brand new car (new and on the sales lot, not fresh from the factory)... What I guess I am asking, is when does a car go from a new car to a demo/used car |

Sometimes, delivery ks with rego receives the factory rebate for demonstrators. :

It is new if it has never been sold or registered (legal definition)

I think it is when a car is registered. If you buy it, you will not be the first registered owner.

yes I thought it was rego too once registered it is a demonstrator or a loan car or a second hander or whatever - thats why before you even collect the car and its registered it drops a crapload in value

I have seen yards sell unlicensed unused new cars as demos when they have a surplus and the next shipment arrives. I cant say all but I can confirm at least some are told by manufacturers how many cars they will be receiving whether they want that many or not |

Manufacturers will usually only take what cars they want. Otherwise they would be paying unnecessary interest on stock units (most new car dealers have their new cars on finance floorplan.)
I wouldn't accept a new car with over 100kms unless it was justified and explained properly by the dealership, and discounted to boot! Not sure about the legalities of it all in terms of KM's. But yes, technically it becomes a demonstrator when it is registered to the dealerships name.

Demonstrators are registered for the manager to take home at the end of the day, and for us the customers to take for a ...ummm...thrash. They have a large discount on them as a result, but they do their job - i bought my gtp only after bringing one home. It sold me by how much fun it was.
Showroom stock is not registered, but sits there for us to ogle over. They are sold at a discount too, especially if they are then turned into demonstrators, which most of them are. The final one is the factory discounted cars, which receive factory rebates for moving them, such as an end of model run-out.

Manufacturers normally require a vehicle to be registered to the dealer for a minimum time period for it to be eligable for a demonstrator rebate. When Ford are clearing older stock then the required duration is shortened, sometimes as little as 2 weeks.

Thank you very much for the info, It has been extremely helpful, as it turns out, the car we bought was accidentally listed as a Demonstrator on a website, but has never been rego'd and only has 16km on the odometer :
So there was no need for my stressing thinking that the dealer was pushing off mutton dressed up as lamb

I think it was 500 klicks for a Holden and the odometer couldn't be rewound after that.

So did you replace the BA Gary? See the sig, congrats on the new FG. So, do you think you might have a chance against Jamies stock XR6T?
Maybe you could put the Qik006 plates on the FG. |

I've been told by a ex VW tech that they can reset the odometer to zero as long as the K's are below 1500. Only once though.
That being said I can't think of a legitimate reason to do so.

Yeh, Traded the BA in on the FG, and the plates are already on the FG.... Already beat Jamies BF Turbo, on the night that he took his BF F6 Ute, and only just missed out on beating him then too, I dont want to start up any old rivalries (Gary 2 / Jaime 1 so I am still in the lead : ) but I think that the FG will wipe the floor with the BF... Especially with the way Jamie has issues with red lighting

I think the legislation changed a couple of years back, when some cub reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper twigged. One reasoning was that it would inhibit sales if potential buyers couldn't take out a low k vehicle for test drive. The pre delivery test and tunes would also rack up unecessarily stress on the purchaser. |

It was worth the wait and saving a big chunk of cash (8gs) for the sake of 650kms.

Relative worked at a prestige dealer and had a fussy customer who wanted her new luxury car with 0 kms on the clock. They rewound the 5 or so Ks off it. Got caught somehow. Several people were sacked (if memory serves correct, including the dealer principal). This would have to be 15 years ago. |

From memory a Falcon can not be sent to a dealer as a new car with more than 80km on the clock.
