Hi,
I'm about to start a project thread for my car. Some Ideas I had for it were to:
Do contributing members get permanent self-editing permission? Alternatively, could I be given a Secondary Group granting permanent self-editing permission? |

Why do you have to edit ??
Just add another post to the original thread... Yes there may be some changes etc.. Just state what has changed, even if it's maybe another car on the same project ...

Agreed, however, collections of information like a to-do list don't survive that treatment very well IMHO.
I'd hate to have to use a to-do list scattered over a few pages of forum thread, and I'm sure others would hate to try and understand it as a complete collection of information as well. The project budget is also a collection of information that would make much more sense if it is kept in one thread-reply. Things like status updates, new photos etc, I would still expect to post sequentially as usual. |

If it's too much grief, I've decided I could keep these things externally in Google Docs.
People would have to click-through from the forums instead of seeing the information in-line, but it would work. Still, if supporting members do get this upgrade to their posting rights, I'm offering to become one. An answer from someone who can confirm or deny this point would be appreciated. |

I don't know if this feature will be added or even if it is possible but as a donating member you still don't get that editing feature but as a moderator for a section you do.
You could simply contact the moderator for the project section with the updated information and I am sure they would be happy to edit for you.

You can edit your posts for 20 minutes after submitting.
By the way "U" is not a word. |

Why not setup the 'to do list, & budgets' as embedded jpeg files?
Tis easy enough to save these lists as a 'snapshot'(do a screengrab of the excel spreadsheet etc) with the same filename. As you update the spreadsheet, do another screengrab, save as a jpeg with the same filename as before, & then upload it to your image hosting site in the same location as before. Personally I think that it is always handy to see how projects evolve over time. Hardly any build stays 100% exactly faithful to the original plan. For those planning their own build it can be a handy / interesting learning tool to see where 'budget issues' may lay in wait for their own future projects. |

Thanks, that's a really clever answer.
I could also go the hybrid approach of a running report of changes over time without too much copy/paste, and maintain an updated snapshot in the one place. This also works around the lack of a bbcode [table] tag. Thanks |

I see where the admins are coming from with this - if you say something, you're supposed to mean it for good - and they compromise for simple mistakes with the 20-minute editing thing.
That said, it still grates from time to time. Some motivations to edit a post are more worthy than others. What admin worth his salt wouldn't want to plonk himself down in the middle of that debate? : |

If you want to change your opinion after 20 minutes ...... do so with a post in your thread.
The main reason as I see it: It keeps the continueity happening. The discussion after the original post ....... no matter if its 1 post or 20 pages long .... suddenly makes no sense if the original question/statement whatever is changed a week later! It would be a Mod/Admin nightmare! If you do a "To do list" and it needs updating, Quote your original post and update it. Keeps the story going. | [/url] |
