Default AU3 front hub removal

I'm going to be removing my front hubs due to wheel bearing noise

I've read the GREAT how-to by ronwest, but one thing still bothers me

The hub nut with the strange (lock?) washer (that wraps around the nut) pictured below...(The bit I put RED LINES on)

Do you just use a socket that fits over the whole thing? or do you need to remove the outer casing pictured?

Also, is this nut re-usable, as in ronwest's pics it appears he has reinstalled the old nut with a new hub

any help appreciated thanks Keith

Yep, socket goes over all of it. (edit - you know, I honestly can't remember if that's correct. You'll know for sure when you try to fit the 35mm socket).

I did in fact re-use the original nut with appropriate Loctite.

Gees Ron I was thinking it was just me that looses the plot
its a 36mmsocket and yes it goes over the entire caseing and needs to be tightend to 305nm or realy realy tight ,my toque wrench doesn't even go that hi so just put a pipe over the breaker bar and lent on it Rons how to is spot on

Is it a 35mm or 36mm socket? I know the how-to says 36 but I miscalculated by one mm when I converted from imperial. I sent a correction in but I'm not sure if it was corrected.

Whoosha brought a 36 off me to do his, and it didnt come back,so I guess it was the rite one

I've got a 35mm socket and it worked for this too, so it looks like 35 or 36mm will work.

I use an Imperial size, an inch and something, from an old 3/4 drive set I had from my trucks, it works.

I have read you are supposed to replace and discard the nuts, similar to brake caliper bolts etc, each time you use them but I never have and neither has anyone else I know.

Do it up tight as you can with a decent size (2ft) bar, never had one come loose yet.

on the other hand is it something you`d leave to chance? if i was going to reuse them i would wack a couple of drops of loctite on the thread.
